        Pacitan ? Bird flu H5N1 infected chickens in two villages on Kabupaten Pacitan, East Java, confirmed spokesman of Pacitan?s Livestock Service, Fathur Rozi. So far, Livestock Service had controlled about 150 chickens that have suddenly died from Desa Nanggungan and Kelurahan Ploso of Kecamatan Pacitan, Fathur said. Similar case was also reported from Desa Jatimalang, Kecamatan Arjosari.

        Control measures had been done by disinfection of the area within 100 meters radius from bird flu suspected bird cages, restriction of chicken transport from outside Pacitan and vaccination.

        Fathur mentioned, chicken meat demand in Pacitan is currently supplied from other areas such as Ponorogo, Tulungagung, Wonogiri and Solo.

        Vaccine is provided for free by government, and currently about 100 thousands dose of vaccine and 150 liter of disinfectant are available, he added.

        Because the outbreak is difficult to detect, Fathur also encouraged people to be active in reporting any suspected events to the officials, and maintaining hygiene and sanitation, including avoiding eating sick birds and burying suddenly died chickens.
