  • Indonesia: Avian Flu Threatens Nunukan Regency, Citizens Asked to Beware

Department of Agriculture and Livestock (Dispertanak) Nunukan officially released the latest news about the spread of bird flu or avian influenza (H5N1) in Nunukan. From a series of deaths of poultry breeds of chickens two months ago, some of which tested positive for the bird flu virus.

"There are some samples that we sent for lab test conducted in Banjarmasin. Result is quite surprising, is among the positive samples infected with the bird flu virus," said Rais Kahar, Head of Animal Health and Public Health at Dispertanak Nunukan.

He continued, preventive measures taken Dispertanak currently quite limited. Because this year Dispertanak Nunukan not budgeted procurement rapid detection tools for diagnosing the spread of this H5N1 virus. However, the area in which livestock are found birds that are sick, eventually spraying disinfectant on cages and the environment to prevent the dissemination of pests.

"We also appealed to all breeders who breed the animals and citizens fowl, as much as possible to report to Dispertanak when finding pet birds that are sick," said Rais.

Furthermore, he explained, the discovery of bird flu virus in Nunukan is quite surprising. Moreover, the H5N1 virus found this time, slightly different from the H5N1 virus were found in various regions in Indonesia a few years ago.

He predicted that the H5N1 virus this time most likely already experienced genetic change (evolve). Because, in the case of death of birds found in the region's farm residents in Jalan Bhayangkara two months ago, only a few chickens are experiencing pain before death.

"Usually, when the bird flu virus is attacking the area, other chickens around it can quickly come infected. But this time, only a few chickens just attacked," he said.

"But the risk of transmission to humans has remained the same, so we ask people to be more careful. Much as possible stay away from sick chickens, because the virus can be spread through the air," he added.

The cause and origin of the outbreak of the bird flu virus in Nunukan not known for sure. But quite a relief, to this day there has been no reports of positive human infected with this virus.

"To this day there has not been, so we ask that residents improve alertness. Avoid virus transmitted to humans," said Rais.

Poultry chicken kind is quite excellent in Nunukan society. Some types of chickens have been deliberately cultivated for specific interests. Starting from chicken contests, food needs to business interests. (*)

Especially before the celebration of Eid al-Adha, the demand for chicken will increase significantly. For the record, positive birds found infected with the H5N1 virus recently, is a type of poultry chicken. (*)
