KPK Arrests Former Health Minister Siti Fadilah in Medical Equipment Graft Case

Jakarta. Former health minister Siti Fadillah Supari was arrested on Monday (24/10) as part of an investigation by the national antigraft agency into alleged corruption related to the procurement of medical equipment during Indonesia's bird flu emergency.

Siti, who served as minister under former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono between 2004 and 2009, was named a suspect in April 2014, for her alleged involvement in a scheme to mark up the prices of crucial medical equipment at the height of the bird flu emergency in 2007, believed to have resulted in state losses of at least Rp 6.8 billion ($522,000).

...Siti caused alarm around the world during the bird flu crisis in 2007 and 2008 by refusing to hand over samples of the H5N1 virus to the World Health Organization (WHO), claiming that the international organization and the United States were engaged in a conspiracy to produce biological weapons and profit from the spread of the disease.

Indonesia’s KPK is among the Southeast Asian country’s most trusted institutions. The agency operates independently of the country’s notoriously corrupt police, prosecutors and courts and enjoys wide ranging powers including the ability to conduct warrantless wiretapping.
