Govt Warns of Looming Bird Flu Epidemic After Recent Poultry Deaths

Jakarta. The Ministry of Agriculture has warned the public about a potential large-scale outbreak of the highly infectious avian influenza, better known as bird flu, following recent reports of poultry deaths due to the virus.

The disease has already caused a large number of poultry deaths since January this year, starting with 224 ducks in Bekasi district, West Java, followed by thousands of chickens, ducks and quails in Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java and South Sulawesi.

Speaking during a media briefing in Jakarta on Monday (16/05), the director of the agriculture ministry's Animal Health Services, I Ketut Diarmita, said the government issued a circular letter in February to increase awareness and to inform members of the public of what measures to take to control the disease.
Test results from the Disease Investigation Center in Wates district, Yogyakarta, showed that most poultry deaths reported between the end of last year and March this year were caused by the H5N1 virus.
"Live bird market surveillance so far shows that high levels of bird flu virus contamination are still found in sampled Greater-Jakarta markets, at around 40 percent. The surveillance is also very important, since it can detect the presence of avian influenza viruses other than the H5N1 subtype, such as H9N2 and H5N2," McGrane said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Monday.
"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
