  • Chicken Waste Pollutes Galur Sari River

    BERITAJAKARTA.COM ? 3/19/2010 8:46:55 PM

Despite the existence of the newly implemented bylaw No 4/2007 on poultry control and distribution, there are still some chicken slaughtering houses (RPA) illegally operating in the capital. One which is located on Jl Namru Pisanganbaru, Matraman, East Jakarta, for instance, the house even dumps its waste into the nearby river, Galur Sari river. Bad odor coming out of the polluted river has been felt quite disturbing by local residents.

Head of Community Unit (RW) 01 of Utankayu Selatan urban village, Subagya Muchtar, during Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo?s visit to his area, hoped the government to immediately take action against the RPA.

?When the river overflows, the flooding reaches as high as 10-20 centimeters. We are worried the polluted water will cause skin diseases to the residents,? he said, Friday (3/19), adding that complaints from local residents have never been responded by the owner of the RPA which has been operating since 1990.

Responding to the complaint, Fauzi Bowo said the flooding most likely would no longer overflow because the government had revitalized Sunter river which is the downstream of Galur Sari river.

Moreover, the governor continued, his administration had also planned to relocate all RPAs in the city including this RPA, to five designated chicken slaughtering houses in April this year. ?The relocation is intended to curb the outbreak of bird flu virus in the capital,? he stated.http://www.beritajakarta.com/2008/en...wil=0&id=14222
