                            Takengon, Central Aceh ::: Avian influenza outbreak in birds

                            Takengon, Aceh – About 30 death chickens in Dusun Sagi Indah Kampung Uning Pegantungan, Kecamatan Bias Aceh Tengah confirmed to be infected by avian influenza virus H5N1 subtype by rapid test. Remaining specimens were sent to Veterinary Disease Investigation Center Regional I Medan, North Sumatera for further test.

                            Avian influenza outbreak revealed when a farmer found that dozens of his chickens and ducks suddenly. The birds appeared healthy at the previous day. Death birds discharged whitish stools and had black-reddish wattles.

                            Animal Health officer and Participatory Disease Surveillance and Response (PDSR) of Aceh Tengan, Milaniarti, DVM, on Tuesday, mentioned that the mortality rate of avian influenza infection in birds only reached 50% per day. “Usually, if one chickens got infected by bird flu virus, the whole chickens in the same flock would die,” said Milaniarti.

                            Meanwhile, officials are still waiting for laboratory test result from Disease Investigation Center, Medan, North Sumatera. Surviving suspected chickens will be burned and buried to anticipate further spreading.
