Indonesia investigating suspicious bird flu cases: official
AFP - Tue Dec 18, 6:31 AM ET

JAKARTA (AFP) - Indonesian bird flu officials said Tuesday they were investigating several recent avian influenza deaths where the victims were believed to have not come into contact with infected poultry.

"In the last three to four months, we have had four cases where the poultry in the victim's neighbourhoods (tested) negative for the virus," said Bayu Krisnamurthi, head of Indonesia's National Avian Influenza Committee.

"The number is significant enough for us to intensify our investigations so that we could have a more accurate explanation," he told a press briefing giving an overview of what has happened in Indonesia this year with bird flu.

"Some 20 percent of confirmed cases in 2006 were inconclusive, meaning there was no direct contact with poultry. This year (2007) the figure has been raised to 30 percent," he added.

The bird flu virus is usually transmitted to humans from infected birds, but scientists fear it could mutate into a form easily transmissible between humans, sparking a global pandemic that could kill millions.

Krisnamurthi nevertheless insisted that Indonesia had made progress in tackling bird flu, with the number of reported cases decreasing this year.

In 2007, 40 cases were confirmed with 35 fatalities, compared to figures of 55 and 45, respectively, in 2006.

But he also conceded that Indonesia needed more effective measures, particularly to combat bird flu in poultry.

According to Krisnamurthi, even though the agriculture ministry vaccinated 70 percent of the country's farmed poultry in 2007, "the quality of the vaccine must be improved," he said.

Indonesia has recorded a total of 115 confirmed bird flu cases, 93 of which resulted in death.

Although beforehand was stated safe, but the bird flu attack could not be it was considered trivial. This matter it was known followed the report on the resident who found the poultry piaraan him died suddenly.

It was related that the availability of the vaccine liquid and disinfektan Fatkhur optimistic still sufficient at least till March next year.

From the data supported available, the case of bird flu this time was that the first time for the last six months.

After undergoing the maintenance for three days in temporary maintenance Space of RSUD Serang, five patients suspect bird flu from the Village/Desa Terumbu, RT 07 /02, Kecamatan Kasemen Serang had finally been reconciled to RS Persahabatan Jakarta by using four Ambulance cars around struck 12,15 WIB, on Friday (21/12).

The five patients who it was suspected were infected by this AI virus respectively the brother and sister that is, Mubinul Hamidi, 16, Nujulul Hak, 10, and Najatul Hidayat, 8, the child as well as two other people that also the brother and sister that is Muhlas, 30, and Iklimah, 17.

The five patients entered RSUD Serang on the Wednesday (19/12) after beforehand could undergo medical treatment in the local Community Health Centre.

Moreover, according to Syamsuri, 30, one of the Muhlas families, in his house still was having two patients more who experienced the same sign and were not yet carried to RSUD Serang because of being waiting for the five patients in brought to RS Persahabatan. The two patients namely Mubitin, 33, and NY Garba, 65, both still one family.

The above translation describes seven suspect H5N1 patients in Serang. Five from one family have been hospitalized at a major infectious disease hospital in Jakarta after first visiting a local clinic, followed by hospitalization at RSUD Serang, followed by transfer to RSUD Friendship.

These five patients from the same family live near poultry that died and were H5N1 positive. Test results are not in yet on the five hospitalized or two additional patients who also have bird flu symptoms. It is unclear if the two additional patients are from the same family or from a neighboring family in Serang.

The hospitalization of 5 or 7 family members in Jakarta are cause for concerns. Recent confirmed cases in Indonesia have clustered in Tangerang, just west of Jakarta, although the recent cases have not been reported as familial clusters.

This cluster is just west of Tangerang, but hospitalization is in Jakarta.

More information on this large cluster would be useful.
