SURABAYA: Airlangga University (Unair), in cooperation with Japan's Kobe University, has developed a laboratory that is to be a research center for bird flu.
It is hoped that with advanced and continuing research, the spread of bird flu could be minimized and fatalities could be reduced.
According to Unair laboratory head Chairul Anwar, scientists at the center would study living avian influenza viruses. This is a key point to the center, as thus far, the lab has studied only dead bird flu viruses.
Inaugurated on Nov. 26, the new lab is named The Indonesia-Japan Collaborative Research Center for Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Disease (CRC-ERID) and conducts Biosafety Level 3 (BSL 3) research.
The research center is located within Unair's Tropical Disease Center.
