Wife of dead bird flu victim declared suspected sufferer
<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA News) - The wife of a man who died of bird flu here last Tuesday, has been admitted to a Medan (North Sumatra) hospital as a suspected bird flu sufferer.
The woman, identified as M (30), was hospitalized after she had taken her husband, the late Muhammad Nabih (31), from Pekanbaru to Tebing Tinggi for burial, Burhanuddin Agung of the Riau provincial health office said here on Monday.
The couple were residents of Simpang Groga hamlet, Balai Makam village, Mandau Duri sub district, Riau province. Muhammad Nabih died last Tuesday at Arifin Achmad hospital in Pekanbaru of bird flu virus infection.
The government confirmed on Saturday (Nov. 10, 2007) that Nabih who died last week was infected with the bird flu virus, raising Indonesia`s bird flu death toll to 91.
The number of deaths by the H5N1 virus has been steadily rising in archipelagic Indonesia where the virus is now endemic in 31 of its 33 provinces.
Muhammad Nabih in Pekanbaru was the second fatality recorded this month.
"Both tests (on Muhammad Nabih) are positive," Daswir Nurdin from the Health Ministry`s bird flu information center told AFP last week.
Two tests for the H5N1 virus must be returned positive before someone is confirmed as dying of avian flu here.
Nurdin said that the latest victim died Tuesday in Pekanbaru shortly after arriving at its main hospital. He had fallen sick on October 31 and been admitted to a local hospital three days later.
"The number of cases (of bird flu in Indonesia) is 113, of which 91 have been fatal," he said.
Besides Indonesia, bird flu deaths have been recorded in Azerbaijan, Cambodia, China, Egypt, Iraq, Laos, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.
Authorities in Indonesia, which reported its first human case in 2005, were initially criticised for being slow to act to curb the virus` spread, AFP said. (*)
