"The patient has been kept on ventilator and his condition continues to be critical. He is under observation for 48-hours," Dr K Subhakar, Chief Coordinator of Swine Flu Cell at the Chest Hospital, told PTI.

The latest case is the first patient to be kept on ventilation at Chest Hospital this year, he said adding "Swine flu virus has so far claimed two lives in Andhra Pradesh this year while four cases including the present one have tested positive for the flu virus."

Re: Fresh swine flu case in Hyderabad, patient's condition serious

Andhra Pradesh has reported the first swine flu case, this summer. The patient is a taxi driver in his forties, who used to transport tourists from the Hyderabad international airport.

He has been admitted to Government General and Chest Hospital in Erragadda. The patient is being kept in ICU. Doctors attending on him have observed that the patient is obese and also suffering from diabetes, which has further worsened his condition. The patient is being kept under a close watch, according to medical staff.

Doctors attending on him are still unaware about the possible source of his infection. They stress that the patient may have come in contact with someone carrying H1N1 infection.

After this case came to light, Andhra Pradesh Government has directed airport authorities in Hyderabad and Vishakhapatnam to screen passengers properly for possible infections.

It may be recalled that the first case of swine flu in the country was reported in Hyderabad, last year in the month of May. The infection spread rapidly and affected 786 persons and killed 53 people.

The government is not taking it lightly this time, according to experts. Medical teams have already been stationed at airports and hospitals have been instructed to be ready for any eventuality. Medical experts feel that by preparing in advance, any outbreak of this deadly virus can be contained.
