A 55-year-old woman from Hadapsar succumbed to swine flu [influenza A/H1N1]-associated complications at a private hospital on [21 Aug 2018], taking the H1N1 casualty count in the city [Pune] to 3 this year [2018] so far. The woman had developed fever with cough and mild breathlessness on [6 Aug 2018], for which she consulted a neighbourhood doctor. When her condition worsened, she was admitted to KEM [King Edward Memorial] hospital on [11 Aug 2018]. However, she was shifted to Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital for better care the same day [11 Aug 2018].

"She developed sepsis during the course of her treatment and succumbed to H1N1 pneumonia, sepsis with acute respiratory distress syndrome around 2.40 pm on [21 Aug 2018]," a doctor from the hospital said.

As many as 11 patients diagnosed with the contagion are currently critical and have been put on ventilator support at different hospitals in the city. Of them, 5 are local residents, while the remaining ones were referred to hospitals in the city from adjoining rural parts for better treatment.

Since 2009 swine flu pandemic, the California strain of the virus [influenza A/H1N1] had been doing the rounds in India. Since January this year [2018], however, NIV [National Institute of Virology, Pune] scientists have been seeing only the Michigan strain of the swine flu virus. Experts said the new strain could be behind the increase in cases and mortality, but it is yet to be proved scientifically.

"The new strain of the virus is sensitive to oseltamivir drug popularly known as Tamiflu or Fluvir medicines," a scientist working with NIV said.

As per the NIV scientists, the molecular markers of virulence do not indicate that this strain (Michigan strain) is more virulent than the California strain. "But since this is a new strain, the entire population for the virus is entirely virgin and the existing herd immunity in the community is of no use against the new strain," he said.

To check the number of cases and mortality, the Maharashtra government has been providing vaccine doses to districts and municipal corporations for free vaccination since July 2015.

Initially, the vaccine was on offer only for pregnant women in 2nd and 3rd trimester. Later, in December 2015, people with diabetes and hypertension were also covered. "Children below the age of 5, elderly people aged 65 or more, people suffering from lung, kidney and liver diseases, people on long-term steroid medications and those with low immunity are vulnerable to the contagion," doctors said.

Maharashtra reels under outbreak of swine flu

Maharashtra reeling under the outbreak of swine flu. 222 positive cases of the H1N1 virus have been detected in the state till now this season. 48 people died because of swine flu out of which 18 are from Pune and adjoining area. Out of 222 positive cases, 179 were detected after 1st August.

Health department officials pointed out that a higher number of positive cases in one month was due to the wet conditions that prevailed throughout the month which in turn creates a favourable condition for the H1N1 virus. State health department has intensified surveillance and asked doctors to administer Oseltamivir within 48 hours if a patient has swine flu-like symptoms.

H1N1 death toll in September touches 10 in Pune district, doctor calls for change in ?swab?

Since August last week to September 16 this year, not only has the number of cases due to influenza A H1N1 risen, but also the mortality figure, leading to a panic mode in the peripheral area of Pune district. In September so far, the death toll due to swine flu has gone up to 10, according to figures released by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Pune, which had less number of H1N1 deaths compared to its Pimpri-Chinchwad civic body counterpart, has suddenly seen a spike with September figure alone reportedly touching 10, and the total number of deaths this year registered at 13.

On the sudden rise in H1N1 infections in urban and rural areas, one of the senior doctors on anonymity alleged that it is because of the ‘weird’ rule of the state health department which is to only test a swab of a patient who is admitted and not of a the one who shows symptoms.

In Nashik, three persons, died within 24 hours, reportedly after contracting the H1N1 virus. This has come as a dampener for those in the midst of Ganpati celebrations in Nashik city and rural areas. Signs of this disease had begun manifesting in July itself, but evidently, no serious cognisance was taken by the authorities. In July, 20 died of symptoms that mimicked H1N1, while over 100 were detected with swine flu symptoms.
