Five more patients test positive for virus: Four confirmed swine flu deaths in capital this year
Doctors, however, said the cause of deaths cannot be solely attributed to the H1N1 or swine flu virus.

AT LEAST four people admitted to a Delhi hospital and tested positive for swine flu have died in the capital this year, hospital officials have told The Indian Express. These would be the first swine flu deaths reported in Delhi this year. Five more patients have tested positive for swine flu and are presently in hospital, officials added.
Doctors, however, said the cause of deaths cannot be solely attributed to the H1N1 or swine flu virus.
According to officials, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has reported four deaths this year. One of the deceased is a 35-year-old Delhi resident, who died on April 17. Doctors said he did not have “any existing comorbid condition”. “He was young and did not have a history of any other serious disease. But it is known that the infection can start inflammation inside the body and pose a serious problem. In this particular case, there could be a possibility that the H1N1 virus was the main reason behind the cause of death,” said Dr Atul Kakar, senior consultant, department of medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
    ...
The other three deceased are two men aged 62 and 58, and a woman of 65. Two of them died in February, while one died on April 24. Sources said these patients had a history of lung and kidney diseases, besides testing positive for swine flu. “Clearly these three deaths are due to the presence of comorbid conditions. With increasing age, liver enzymes that are on a higher side, and with comorbid conditions, it increases the risk of death,” said Gogia.

This season's first death from swine flu in AIIMS Delhi

New Delhi, 28 July 2017, updated 13:52 IST
Swine flu has been the first death of this season in the country's largest hospital, AIIMS (Delhi). It is being told that the person who died in AIIMS was from Faridabad and was kept on the ventilator. So far 21 cases of swine flu have been found positive in AIIMS this year, whereas in July alone 7 cases have been reported.

Comment: Official government reports report a much lower number of confirmed fatalities. This is true not only for H1N1, but also Dengue, Chikungunya etc. There have been at least 2 deaths at AIIMS reported in the media, this would increase the number of fatalities in Delhi, conservatively, to 15. Some of these patients have come from Nepal, others from Uttar Pradesh and other surrounding states.- Ro

Delhi's central govt hospitals report 47 swine flu deaths this

New Delhi, Aug 22 Swine flu has claimed 47 lives, including 22 from Delhi, in the four central government hospitals of the national capital till date this year, officials said.
These figures however, contradict, Delhi government's data, compiled from all hospitals, including the four central government hospitals, in the city, which puts the toll due to the H1N1 virus in the city at five, of which two are from Delhi.
The Ram Manohar Lohia (RML), AIIMS and Safdarjung hospitals accounted for 95, 45 and 27 positive cases of H1N1 influenza respectively till date this year, of which 45 people have died.
Besides these, the centre-run Lady Hardinge Hospital reported 30 confirmed cases of swine flu and two deaths between July 1 and August 16, a senior doctor said.
According to RML hospital authorities, of the 22 people who died due to H1N1 virus, 13 were from Delhi while seven were from Uttar Pradesh and two from Haryana.
A total of 195 people, including 117 from the national capital, were admitted to RML hospital with swine flu symptoms, out of which 95 tested positive, an official said.
The AIIMS recorded 45 positive swine flu cases, out of which 12 people died, including four from Delhi, a senior official at the hospital said.
The Safdarjung hospital saw 27 cases positive cases and recorded 11 deaths, of which five were from Delhi, a senior official of the hospital said.
However, as per Delhi government's latest data, the total number of deaths due to swine flu this year stands at five which includes two from Delhi.
According to the data, the city has recorded 1,556 cases of swine flu. All the hospitals in the national capital, including the four central government hospitals notify the swine flu case figures and deaths to the Delhi government.
Asked about the central government hospitals in Delhi reporting several deaths due to swine flu, a senior health department official of the Delhi government said, "We have not received these figures from the hospitals. As soon as they send the data we will revise our list."

Delhi: Swine flu death toll higher than reported

Just five hospitals in the city have witnessed at least 43 deaths. Vulnerable groups include pregnant women, children under five, the over-65s and those with serious medical conditions.

The Capital is being swept by a deadly swine flu wave that has left hundreds ill and claimed dozens of lives. While the government has reports of 2,177 cases with five deaths over the past two months, MAIL TODAY confirmed from top hospitals in the city that the toll is multiple times higher.
In 2009-10, the H1N1 swine flu pandemic spread from central Mexico to 74 other countries including India, killing an estimated 2,84,000 people, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The respiratory illness originated in pigs, but is now a human disease spread by coughing and sneezing. Symptoms are similar to those produced by standard, seasonal flu - fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and chills.
Vulnerable groups include pregnant women, children under five, the over-65s and those with serious medical conditions. Just five hospitals in the city have witnessed at least 43 deaths.
                      'ALARMING PROPORTIONS'
At Delhi's AIIMS, a senior doctor said about 40 confirmed cases of swine flu have been recorded with at least 11 patients dying of the disease in the last two months.
"This year, we are witnessing the H1N1 cases in alarming proportions in Delhi. Our hospital has at least 200 positive cases of swine flu and 13 people died due to the disease," Dr AK Gadpayle, director of RML Hospital, told Mail Today. "In fact, four paediatric patients who are in the ICU have been diagnosed. We have dedicated ICU beds and a large amount of drugs, syrups, vaccines and masks to deal with the disease."
Swine flu is more aggressive this year even as vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya are also stalking the city, Dr Gadpayle added, asking residents to stay cautious.
                      MICHIGAN STRAIN
According to medical researchers, the H1N1 virus in circulation this year is of the Michigan strain. Previously, Delhi was hit by the California strain. Sir Ganga Ram Hospital confirmed three swine flu deaths and 233 positive cases. Neighbouring, BLK Super Speciality Hospital also reported three H1N1 deaths this monsoon.
"We were of the view that cases will decrease, but in the past two weeks a lot of patients have been being diagnosed with influenza A (H1N1) virus. Three patients died. It is the first time that we are treating swine flu cases in monsoon at such a large scale," said Dr RK Singal, head of internal medicine at BLK hospital.
"One of the major reasons is erratic rains and intense humidity in the city. People should avoid crowded places and maintain good hand hygiene."
The crippling outbreak in 2009-2010 affected around 50,000 people in the country and claimed the lives of more than 2,700.
"The actual number of deaths is much higher than the official figure of five. Cases are underreported," said a doctor at a private facility. Dr AK Rai, director of the government-run Safdarjung Hospital, informed this reporter of 33 confirmed cases of swine flu and 13 patient deaths.
While the government has reports of 2,177 swine flu cases with five deaths over the past two months, MAIL TODAY confirmed from top hospitals in the city that the toll is multiple times higher.

Reporting mismatch: Six swine flu deaths in Delhi but 31 alone in a single hospital

single government hospital in Delhi has reported more deaths due to swine flu than the total number of deaths reported from the state, according to the data released by the Centre. Dr Ram Manohar Lohia hospital had reported 31 deaths due to influenza A (H1N1), commonly known as swine flu, till September 18. However, a total of six deaths have been reported from entire Delhi, according to data till September 17 released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).
According to the data from RML hospital, there have been 305 admissions due to swine flu till September 18. In the same period, Safdarjung hospital has recorded 45 cases and 17 deaths, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has recorded 55 cases and three deaths and Delhi government?s Lok Nayak hospital has had 19 cases and one death due to H1N1.
This means, just four hospitals in the city have a death toll of 52 due to swine flu.

                              ...

This year, there has been a jump in the number of swine flu cases across the country. A total of 34,009 cases and 1,714 deaths due to H1N1 have been reported till September 17 this year. Maharashtra is the worst hit state with 5,191 cases and 568 deaths, followed by Gujarat with 6,994 cases and 413 deaths.

A total of 2,755 cases of swine flu have been reported from Delhi till September 17, according to the country-wide data released by IDSP. The number of cases is likely to be much higher as swine flu causes symptoms like fever, cold and cough and very few need hospital admission
