H1N1 cases on the rise, but Telangana hospitals ill-equipped for crisis

Summary: More than swine flu patients with ARDS, ECMO is used during cardiac surgery to provide cardiopulmonary bypass. For swine flu patients in the state, however, ECMO is a distant reality. "We are helpless as the government's 2015 circular tells us not to treat a confirmed swine flu patient unless he or she develops ARDS. HYDERABAD: Swine flu is back with a bang in the state. As many as 56 positive cases of H1N1 infection have been reported within the first 20 days itself. H1N1 toll higher than reported by private hospitals

HYDERABAD: While district health officials insist that there have been only five swine flu deaths in Telangana since January 1, the toll, sources say, could be much higher. Reason: the lack of a mechanism to monitor deaths in private hospitals.

Sample this: On January 10, a four-year-old boy was detected as H1N1 positive while undergoing treatment at a corporate hospital in Banjara Hills. While the boy, a resident of Nizamabad and son of a chicken seller, succumbed to the swine flu virus on January 24 ? after more than 10 days on ventilator support ? his death is yet to be officially recorded.

"I had to sell my house to raise money for his treatment that cost somewhere around Rs 8 lakh, including Rs 50,000 per day ICU charges. He was my only son," said the father (name withheld on request). He added that he could not utilise his Aarogyasri card to avail free treatment for his son.

HYDERABAD: A dip in temperatures is a known accelerant of swine flu and 210 people tested positive overtaking the 2016 numbers within 36 days. 70 cases were observed in just four days of this month.

Dr. K Narasimhulu, former swine flu coordinator at Gandhi Hospital who worked at the nodal center during 2015 said.?Nothing can be said, but it may point towards changes in the H1N1 virus.?
Many private hospitals are providing treatment for both suspected as well as cases confirmed by Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM). The government health official said that the private hospitals charge exorbitantly, per day treatment cost of an H1N1suspect or a positive patient in ICU range between Rs 40,000 and Rs 3 lakh depending upon the size of the hospital.

Mujtaba Hasan Askari, president, Helping Hand Foundation, which recently sought the intervention of the principal secretary (health) said. ?We had requested the government to set up a task force on swine flu to manage and monitor a range of issues, including raising awareness and surveillance to negotiate with private hospitals for common package rate. But no such steps have been taken yet.?
