    Health camps held after H1N1-infected man dies in Coimbatore


    COIMBATORE: Public health department officials have been conducting fever camps in K K Pudur and going door-to-door, checking for fever patients.

    This move comes after a 65-year-old man from the area died of the H1N1 virus on Tuesday morning. The department has already begun giving prophylactic treatment to the victim's family members and senior citizens among his neighbors.

    The city's public health department has been on prevention overdrive since Monday night, when the victim first tested positive for the virus. "The department immediately got in touch with us to check if any of us were suffering fever, sore throat or a cold," said J Suresh, son of the victim, V Jayabal.

    "They also came and gave us Oseltamivir tablets on Monday night and asked us to have it. The older people were given injections," he said. "Neighbours too were checked," he said.


    Jayabal, 65, who used to work with a private firm, became the second person to die of the virus this year. The man who was suffering from high fever for the past 10 days passed away in Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital early Tuesday morning. "He was also suffering from severe left abdomen pain and headache for four days continuously," said Suresh.

    Navy man from U.P. dies of swine flu in Madurai


    A 39-year-old man serving in INS Parundu naval air station in Uchipuli in Ramanathapuram district reportedly died of H1N1 infection (swine flu) at Government Rajaji Hospital here early on Thursday.
    Confirming the cause of death to be H1N1 infection, an official in the hospital said the navy person, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, was referred to the GRH three days back.
    Multi-organ failure
    Tests conducted at the hospital confirmed that he was affected by swine flu. He was treated at a special ward. Hospital sources said that the person died of multi-organ failure.
    According to the hospital authorities, the post-mortem was performed on Thursday, and officials from INS Parundu were planning to airlift the body to his native place on Friday.
    Officials from INS Parundu, however, could not be contacted.

        Coimbatore woman dies of suspected H1N1

        COIMBATORE: A 36-year-old woman died of suspected H1N1 virus at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Wednesday.

        The woman, who had been suffering from fever and throat pain, started feeling breathlessness over a four-day period.

        The woman, Srija Tajsaikarthik of Mullai Nagar, was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) around 4.25pm on Tuesday with difficulty in breathing. "The family informed doctors that the patient had had fever for the past two days and was admitted to a private hospital for the same," said CMCH resident medical officer Dr A Soundaravel. "Realising the low oxygenation that was taking place, we took her into the intermediate care unit immediately," he said.

          Kovaipudur woman did not die of A (H1N1) flu

          The Health Department on Saturday stated that the death of a 36-year-old woman from Kovaipudur at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Wednesday was not due to A (H1N1) influenza.
          Results of the tests on her throat swab and blood sample revealed that she died of haemorrhagic fever, health officials said. CMCH Dean A. Edwin Joe said laboratory results confirmed that the woman had not contracted the A (H1N1) virus.
