Health camps held after H1N1-infected man dies in Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: Public health department officials have been conducting fever camps in K K Pudur and going door-to-door, checking for fever patients.
This move comes after a 65-year-old man from the area died of the H1N1 virus on Tuesday morning. The department has already begun giving prophylactic treatment to the victim's family members and senior citizens among his neighbors.
The city's public health department has been on prevention overdrive since Monday night, when the victim first tested positive for the virus. "The department immediately got in touch with us to check if any of us were suffering fever, sore throat or a cold," said J Suresh, son of the victim, V Jayabal.
"They also came and gave us Oseltamivir tablets on Monday night and asked us to have it. The older people were given injections," he said. "Neighbours too were checked," he said.
Jayabal, 65, who used to work with a private firm, became the second person to die of the virus this year. The man who was suffering from high fever for the past 10 days passed away in Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital early Tuesday morning. "He was also suffering from severe left abdomen pain and headache for four days continuously," said Suresh.
