  • India Influenza 2015: 2,990 confirmed fatalities

    Link to 2014 thread: https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/...influenza-2014

Media reported H1N1 fatalities are occurring at a much higher rate than this time in 2014 or 2012, but are lower than the rates reported in January 2013. Of course since India lacks a comprehensive surveillance program, we are left with only media reports. Media reported fatalities to date are listed below. Other types of influenza do not get reported. Worth bearing in mind that a study from 2012 estimated that, during the 2009-10 pandemic, confirmed fatalities in India represented only 2-3 % of total H1N1 fatalities. Thus these confirmed H1N1 fatalities could represent between 1,100 and 1,600 actual H1N1 deaths, which in turn suggests tens, if not hundreds of thousands of H1N1 cases this year. In addition, of course, there are other flu strains in circulation that we have little or no information about.

Cases have also been reported in Odisha and Chandigarh.

WHO GISRS data is not available at the time of posting, but I will add it in later.

Overall media reported H1N1 fatalities this January are occurring at a much higher rate than in the corresponding periods in 2014, 2013, 2012 or 2011. Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab did report higher levels of mortality in January 2013 than in the current outbreak. Gujarat experienced significant mortality in February of 2013 suggesting that this current outbreak may still be in the growth phase in that state. Of course since India lacks a comprehensive surveillance program, we are left with only media reports. Media reported H1N1 fatalities to date are listed below. Other types of influenza do not get reported. Worth bearing in mind that a study from 2012 estimated that, during the 2009-10 pandemic, confirmed fatalities in India represented only 2-3 % of total H1N1 fatalities. Thus these confirmed H1N1 fatalities could represent between 4,600 and 6,700 actual H1N1 deaths, which in turn suggests hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of H1N1 cases this year. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare11-February, 2015 18:02 IST
Health Ministry holds review meeting on H1N1

The status of H1N1 influenza being reported from different states was reviewed today at a high level meeting chaired by the Secretary (Health & Family Welfare) Shri B P Sharma where in addition to the Director General, Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Jagdish Prasad, representatives of leading government hospitals such as Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Safdurjung, AIIMS, and from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) were also present.

It was noted that that during the period 1 Jan 2015-10 February 2015, the total number of H1N1 cases is 5157 and number of deaths is 407. Largely the cases are from Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana whereas largely the deaths due to H1N1 are in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Telangana.

The current trends of morbidity and mortality, the diagnostic and test algorithms being followed, availability of diagnostic kits and drugs, and other preventive measures were discussed. Based on the advice given by experts it was decided that various health institutions treating H1N1 cases be advised for vaccination against H1N1 influenza for the concerned health workers in the hospitals in contact with H1N1 patients. This will be in addition to the proper personal protective measures being followed at the hospitals. Guidelines are being drafted for vaccination of healthcare workers and these will be shared with the states for dissemination to all health institutions.

The Government of India has already placed an order for enhancing stock of diagnostic kits to be supplied to the lab network under Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) being used for testing H1N1 influenza. To enhance the level of preparedness, additional 60,000 Oseltamivir medicines and 10,000 N-95 masks are being procured. In addition, NCDC has floated a tender for additional 10,000 diagnostic kits. In case of need, labs under ICMR have been identified across the country to provide additional testing facilities. In order to prevent panic and inconvenience to people, and to encourage only those cases requiring H1N1 testing are actually taken up for testing, it was decided that the communication strategy should create awareness among the general public regarding this aspect.

Ministry issues new norms to keep down swine flu numbers

Written by Abantika Ghosh | New Delhi | Posted: February 13, 2015 2:47 am
Facing an unprecedented spike in swine flu casualties, the Health Ministry has issued guidelines not to test flu patients for H1N1, unless essential. This would mean that these patients would still be treated for the disease, but would not add to the already explosive swine flu statistics across the country.
India has reported 5,157 cases of H1N1 since January 1 ? 505 of them on February 10. There have been 407 deaths in the first 41 days of 2015 ? almost double the total toll of 2014 at 216.
                  ...
Health ministry in its revised guidelines released Wednesday classified flu cases into category A (who do not need testing and can stay at home but must avoid contact with high-risk family members), category B (who do not need H1N1 tests but may need Oseltamivir) and category C (who may have symptoms like breathlessness blood pressure drop etc who should be tested and hospitalised).

India sees rapid rise in swine flu deaths and cases

                    Health ?
(Reuters) - India has seen a sharp rise in the number of swine flu deaths and reported cases this year, prompting officials to investigate the cause and step up efforts to combat the virus.

The H1N1 virus caused 485 deaths in India between Jan. 1 and Feb. 12, additional health secretary Arun Kumar Panda told reporters on Friday.

He said more than 6,000 people had tested positive for the virus during that time.

"There is no explanation or reason," Panda said. "We will ask states to investigate why the number of cases is rising."

2015 swine flu toll at 485, more than two-fold jump over 2014

NEW DELHI: More than 70 people across the country succumbed to swine flu in just two days since Feb. 10 as the toll from the disease so far this year reached 485, which is more than double the number of deaths reported in the whole of 2014.

Even as the Union Health Ministry seems to be searching for an explanation behind the sudden spurt in the incidence of the disease, official data said that the total number of cases of swine flu reported till Feb. 12 this year has reached 6,298.

"There is no explanation and reason behind this spurt... The virus is the same H1N1 strain since 2009. There has been no mutation.

"So, it's very difficult to explain why in a particular year it has come down so drastically and, then, the very next year, it shot up again," Panda said, adding, however, that "the rise is a cause of concern".
