District on high alert after first swine flu death; 'crisis ward' set up

BAREILLY: Health officials have sounded a high alert in the district following the death of a patient who was found suffering from swine flu (H1N1). This is the first death reported from the city.

A 'crisis ward' has been set up in the district as a precautionary measure to treat swine flu patients. The ward is equipped with all necessary medicines to fight the disease, say district health officials.

The case came to light on Friday, after a private hospital received test reports from PGI of a woman who had died on January 24. The reports confirmed that H1N1 was the cause of death.

According to reports, 37-year-old Amita Upadhyaya was suffering from high fever since January 11. She had been treated by her local doctor but the medications had no effect. She was then admitted to a private hospital in the city. However, her condition did not improve.

She was eventually shifted to another private hospital (SRMS). The doctors over there suspected it to be a case of swine flu and sent samples of her saliva to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences for testing on January 24. However, before the results could come back, the woman died on January 24.

The doctor then dismissed the case. So when the results came back on January 30, they were caught off guard.
