Swine flu death toll in city rises to 51
            TNN, Sep 24, 2010, 05.02am IST

NAGPUR: With the deaths of three more H1N1 patients at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in this week, the swine flu toll in the city reached 51 on Thursday.

Of these, 35 deaths occurred in GMCH. But many of the deceased are from the neighbouring cities and states. The death toll within the city limits has reached 17.

The H1N1 virus however seems to be going harsh on pregnant women. It has taken the lives of nine such women till now. This week, eight-month pregnant Nanda K Ukey from Gondia died at GMCH on Wednesday while six-month pregnant Vinita Thakre, a 21-year-old woman from Betul died two days back. The third patient to die in this week was a two-year-old boy from Wanadongri Saksham Sakhre who died in the prenatal intensive care unit (PICU) at GMCH on Monday. He was admitted to PICU on September 16.

According to Dr MM Borkar, public relations officer of GMCH, of the 248 samples sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune since April this year, 89 have tested positive. The 35 deceased include nine pregnant women and three women who had delivered babies just a few days before their death.

                Swine flu virus changes colours

Doctors across hospitals and a state review meeting find H1N1 patients either showing symptoms of bacterial infection or no symptoms at all

Health officials have yet another reason to worry. Doctors across hospitals treating swine flu patients have reported that the symptoms of the flu have changed. Patients testing positive for the virus are either showing no symptoms at all and appear healthy or show symptoms that were not exhibited before causing much confusion.

Speaking to MiD DAY, Dr.C A Kante, officer in charge of swine flu cell said the new symptoms or rather the lack of it was discussed at a state level review meeting as well.

"This is actually a viral infection, but now the symptoms being displayed are of a bacterial infection. Instead of showing typical symptoms such as cold, cough and fever; people are getting loose motions and vomitting," said Kante.

"Earlier, the virus was affecting the upper respiratory tract and central nervous system but now it has started affecting the gastro-intestinal tract. All hospitals and doctors have been asked to stay on alert," Kante said.
"It is true the symptoms have indeed changed. We get positive reports for children who have absolutely no symptoms at all.

They appear perfectly normal on the outside but actually they have been suffering from the flu for quite sometime," said Dr Aarti Kinikar, head of paediatric department, Sassoon Hospital.

Dr Sharad Agharkedkhar, president of Indian Medical Association, Pune said that all doctors need to be on alert as the symptoms could be mistaken for some other infection as well.

"If the symptoms are manifesting themselves in a completely different manner then it would get confusing for doctors to diagnose and it would not be fair to blame them. Firstly, there should be increase in preventive care as that is the key to stopping the virus. Also, doctors need to be really alert and should watch out for new symptoms too," he said.

H1N1 virus spreads in rural areas near Pune

Pune, September 24, 2010 ? The H1N1 virus continues to spread in rural areas adjoining Pune city despite all major precautions taken by the State Health department. Hospitalisation records show that the H1N1 virus spread in a massive way, especially in the monsoon season when the virus was airborne. This is revealed in a study by National Institute of Virology (NIV).

The spread was rapid in July in the rural areas, as the city lacks basic infrastructure in these areas. ?By the time patient comes for diagnosis, and sends samples for testing in the NIV, the infection reaches an advanced stage and it becomes very difficult to cure the patient at that stage as more people are infected,? said Chadrakant Dalvi, the Collector of the city.

Dalvi said, ?In the district there were two screening centres which were newly opened where tests are done and for further confirmation later these reports were sent to NIV. Initially in the year 2009 the H1N1 virus took a heavy
                      toll in Pune city.

Director of NIV, Akhilchandra Mishra said, ?The virus is a winter phenomenon in western countries.

It could find the same favourable conditions during the monsoon in India. The H1N1 group of viruses proliferate more when the weather is humid and cool. The virus is an airborne one and humidity and cool weather are conducive factors for its survival,?

The Influenza A pandemic H1N1 2009 virus appeared in India in May 2009 and thereafter a few outbreaks resulted in considerable mortality rates increasing in many parts of the country.

Continuous monitoring of the genetic makeup of the virus is essential to understand its evolution within the country in relation to the global scene and to track the mutations that may affect the behaviour of the virus.

Medical data states that in July an average of 25-30 fresh cases were reported daily.
