    Authorities fumble as H1N1 spreads
Snehlata Shrivastav, TNN 23 September 2009, 05:29am IST

NAGPUR: District, health, and education authorities appeared to be in confusion as H1N1virus spread further in city. With four children from
different educational institutes testing positive on Tuesday, the district authorities first ordered the schools involved closed from Wednesday to Monday. Later, they reversed the decision to be able to screen the other students in the schools and ?not to cause panic?.

However, all schools in city have been asked to remain shut on Friday and Saturday making it a four-day holiday up to Monday. The administration may, however, close down schools even before Friday if situation warrants. The four schools first ordered closed from Wednesday are Somalwar Ramdaspeth, Bhavan?s BP Vidya Mandir Shrikrishna Nagar, Delhi Public School, and University College of Law.

The decision to close primary and secondary schools comes in the wake of over 4000 children from various city schools being found with infections in a survey conducted by the state education department.

            One suspected swine flu death
Snehlata Shrivastav, TNN 25 September 2009, 06:40am IST
            |

NAGPUR: Pankaj Tiwari, a 22-year-old youth from village Warthi in Bhandara district, died of pneumonia and other medical complications like
septicaemia and respiratory and cardiac failure at the swine flu isolation ward of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) at 11.35pm on Wednesday
. However, it is yet to be ascertained whether he was H1N1 positive, since GMCH is awaiting his reports from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.

Tiwari had been admitted to GMCH on Wednesday afternoon at 2.45pm. Before that he was being treated at the Orange City Hospital and Research Institute (OCHRI) for about two days, and at a private hospital in Bhandara for three days before being referred to GMCH. "He was brought to GMCH in an extremely critical condition and had multiple organ failure due to septicaemia. His blood and swab samples were sent to NIV this morning and his report is awaited. So it is still a suspected death," said GMCH acting dean Dr A Niswade.

GMCH doctors said that as per the history given to them Tiwari was first admitted in a private practitioner's clinic at Bhandara from last Saturday to Monday, and then shifted to another private nursing home in Nagpur, from where he was sent to OCHRI the same day.

Sources close to the Tiwari family told TOI that he also could have been a victim of the treatment by a quack doctor. Tiwari had developed complications immediately after this quack (people know him as `Raghorte compounder') from Warthi gave him an injection when he complained of cold and fever. "If the compounder was not guilty, why has he fled immediately after learning about Tiwari's death?" asked a relative. Tiwari was an activist of the Youth Congress.

Meanwhile, on Thursday evening, GMCH had nine patients admitted to the swine flu isolation ward which included four positive patients (including two children) and five suspected patients, with eight patients who tested negative having been discharged. Of the admitted patients, two women are on ventilator.
A new patient, a 65-year-old woman from Trimurti Nagar, was admitted on Thursday. She was referred to GMCH by the Lata Mangeshkar Hospital and put on ventilator. A 20-year-old woman from Betul also continued to be on ventilator and her condition remained serious.

An admitted patient, a 61-year-old woman from Wadhamna on Amravati Road, also tested positive as per the latest NIV reports received on Thursday.

Sources also said that a team from the state medical education and drugs department will be in the city on Friday to inspect facilities at isolation wards set up in fifteen private hospitals before allowing them to start admitting suspected patients.

A government release on Thursday evening also said that a third medical shop, Vinod Medical and General Stores at Medical Square, has now been authorised to stock Oseltamivir, the drug used to treat swine flu.
It is yet to be ascertained whether he was H1N1 positive, since GMCH is awaiting his reports from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.
