BANGALORE: With two women dying of swine flu here, the death toll in the pandemic has risen to 43 in Karnataka, even as 17 fresh positive cases were
detected in the state on Sunday.
The two, aged 24 and 29, were admitted to private hospitals here last month with bilateral pneumonia. They died of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome on September 4 and 5 respectively and the results of their throat swab tests received today confirmed them to be H1N1 positive, health department officials said.
"As in most cases, these casualties are also because of co-infection," they said, adding 17 positive cases of H1N1 were reported on Sunday. Of this, 14 were in Bangalore, two in Bijapur and one in Mysore.
Till date, 587 confirmed cases of H1N1 had been reported in the state, the officials said.
The headline reflects the disagreement between the Hindu total (now 41) and that reported by the Times of India.
