Tamiflu sale
Meanwhile, highly placed sources in the Health Department told The Hindu that the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was planning to permit authorised stockists to sell Tamiflu, the only anti-viral drug for swine flu, in the open market, but only against a prescription.
The issue was taken up for discussion at a meeting of officials from the Union Health Ministry, nodal officers and experts from various States held in New Delhi on Thursday. According to sources, the Union Health Ministry officials are likely to allow open sale of Tamiflu after calling tenders from stockists. But experts in the frontline of combating the outbreak said permission for open sale of the drug may result in resistance and cause problems in a second outbreak.
?But our concern is to check the spread of the disease now. We hope the vaccine for (A) H1N1 will be ready by the time a second outbreak occurs,? the sources said. While authorising the Health departments of various States to procure additional stocks of Tamiflu on their own, if their requirement was more, the Union Health Ministry is also likely to authorise the State governments to check the feasibility of allowing private labs to conduct A(H1N1) tests, the sources added.
There was another article recently in India, that mentioned "co-infection". Someone had died, and they were co-infected. I would like to know what the other infection was.....
"A majority of the casualties due to the virus has been because of co-infection and also as the patients came to hospital in a critical state," the officials said.
