Swine flu toll rises to 40 in Karnataka
    PTI
With the swab samples of six more persons including two women, (who died earlier in Bangalore) testing positive for H1N1 virus, the swine flu toll in Karnataka rose to 40 on Friday, health officials said.

The officials at the state health department, on condition of anonymity, said these cases were being termed "old" ones, as they "don't want to create panic". The yesterday's H1N1 toll was 34.

"A majority of the casualties due to the virus has been because of co-infection and also as the patients came to hospital in a critical state," the officials said.

Health authorities said 18 persons tested positive for swine flu today, pushing up the number of confirmed cases to 554 in the state.

That's six more confirmed today, but with less and less information being revealed.

There was another article recently in India, that mentioned "co-infection". Someone had died, and they were co-infected. I would like to know what the other infection was.....

"A majority of the casualties due to the virus has been because of co-infection and also as the patients came to hospital in a critical state," the officials said.

I would assume they are talking about bacterial co-infections like MRSA and strep.

        More info on 2 of the six at the start of this thread;

Two more die of A(H1N1) in the city

        Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Two more persons died of A(H1N1) complications in private hospitals in the city, taking the total number of deaths in the State to 38.

While one of them, a 21-year-old person, died on September 1 at Sagar Hospitals, Jayanagar, his report confirming that he tested positive for swine flu was received on Friday. This apart, a 31-year-old woman died in a private hospital on September 2.

While Sagar Hospitals, Jayanagar, confirmed the death of another 16-year-old boy(Ro's note: R Ranjit) from Malathahalli two days ago, the State Health authorities confirmed it only on Friday. Eighteen more persons, all from Bangalore, tested positive on Friday, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the State to 554.

        Tamiflu sale

Meanwhile, highly placed sources in the Health Department told The Hindu that the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was planning to permit authorised stockists to sell Tamiflu, the only anti-viral drug for swine flu, in the open market, but only against a prescription.

The issue was taken up for discussion at a meeting of officials from the Union Health Ministry, nodal officers and experts from various States held in New Delhi on Thursday. According to sources, the Union Health Ministry officials are likely to allow open sale of Tamiflu after calling tenders from stockists. But experts in the frontline of combating the outbreak said permission for open sale of the drug may result in resistance and cause problems in a second outbreak.

?But our concern is to check the spread of the disease now. We hope the vaccine for (A) H1N1 will be ready by the time a second outbreak occurs,? the sources said. While authorising the Health departments of various States to procure additional stocks of Tamiflu on their own, if their requirement was more, the Union Health Ministry is also likely to authorise the State governments to check the feasibility of allowing private labs to conduct A(H1N1) tests, the sources added.

You know, I thought it was, but now I'm not sure. If all we've got to go on is sex, age and dod, I'm hoping that our reporter friends are getting their facts straight. I hope some other media outlet picks up the story and elaborates tomorrow. As of right now, I'm keeping them seperate.
