    AURANGABAD: One more H1N1 death was confirmed from Ausa in Latur district late on Monday evening, taking the swine flu toll in Marathwada region to five. Earlier, one death each was reported from Latur, Beed, Jalna and Aurangabad.
    The number of H1N1 positive patients has increased to 63 in the region. The authorities here, however, claim that all the positive patients (except those dead) are doing well and a majority of them have already been discharged, after recovering fully.
    The latest victim has been identified as Channabas Shankar Swami (55), who was initially admitted to a private hospital where he was treated for two days before being shifted to the government hospital on August 22, said Dr S S Patil, the deputy director of health services, Latur. Patil said that Swami died the same evening (August 22) due to acute respiratory disorder, myocarditis and viral fever.
    Swami's throat swab was sent for examination to Pune on August 22 and the report confirming his death due to swine flu was received on Monday evening (August 24), Patil said.
    The Latur division, comprising Latur, Beed, Osmanabad and Nanded, has so far screened 27,074 people for swine flu and of them 269 had been isolated. After further examination, 249 swabs were sent for examination, of which 43, including Swami's, were found positive.
    Aurangabad division comprises Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani and Hingoli and it has received a stock of about 40,000 Tamiflu tablets. Dr Vilas Nikam, the assistant director of health services, Aurangabad, said that barely 20 per cent has been required for treatment so far.
    He said that, except for the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the region had screened 972 people for swine flu on Tuesday while the total number of those screened is 23,203.
    On Tuesday the authorities in Aurangabad rural screened 115 people, in the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) limit 550 were examined, followed by Parbhani (284), Jalna (18) and Hingoli (five).
    According to Dr B K Somani, the superintendent of GMCH, Aurangabad, 40 people were examined on Tuesday taking the number of people screened so far at the GMCH to 3,706. Only one swab was obtained and sent for examination. He also said that at present no one is admitted in the quarantine ward of the GMCH.
    He said 179 swabs were sent for examination to Pune, while the region has recorded 20 positive cases out of 162 NIV reports that the authorities here have received so far.
