    Pune, Aug 25 (PTI) With a 56-year-old man succumbing to swine flu today, the death toll due to the deadly virus here rose to 24, health officials said.

    The latest casualty was Bharat Sahane, who was shifted to a private hospital here from neighbouring Satara district on August 24, Dr Ashok Laddha, additional director, health, told reporters.

    Laddha said there were 17 H1N1 positive patients in the ICU of various hospitals in the city and 12 of them were in a critical condition. Meanwhile, 17 fresh cases of swine flu were reported during the last 24 hours.

    PUNE: The swine flu toll in the city rose to 24 on Tuesday, with one more patient succumbing to the contagion at the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital in Pimpri. According to Ashok Ladda, joint director of the state health department, Bharat Sahane (56) of Koregaon in Satara district, who was moved to the isolation ICU of YCM hospital in critical condition on Monday, died at 6.30 am the next day. ?He had tested positive for the H1N1 influenza,? he said. Ladda said, ?Sahane showed symptoms of cough, fever etc, and was initially admitted to a private hospital in Koregaon between August 21 to 24. Later, he was referred to a private hospital in Thergaon in PCMC limits as he didn?t show any signs of improvement. The hospital in turn referred the patient to YCM Hospital the same day.?
    The patient was immediately put on the ventilator at the YCM Hospital and his throat swab sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing the same day. The report of this throat swab came after he died, he added.
    Elaborating on the underlying medical condition of Sahane, Ladda said, ?He had undergone an angioplasty at a private hospital in the PCMC area last year.?
