    Flu pandemic claims two more lives, toll climbs to 71

    A toddler and a middle-aged man have succumbed to swine flu in Maharashtra and Gujarat, pushing the nationwide toll due to the pandemic to 71 even as schools and colleges in Pune, which had been shut due to the spurt in the infection, reopened on Monday after nearly two weeks.

    Over 100 more fresh cases of flu infection were reported from various states yesterday. The two-and-a-half year-old child, who was suffering from a liver disorder, was admitted to the Command Hospital in worst-hit Pune on August 21 after she tested positive for the virus, health officials said.

    She passed away last night, they said. With toddler's death, the toll in Pune has risen to 23 and in Maharashtra to 39.

    52-year-old Rajesh Udhad, who was admitted to Wockhardt Hospital in Rajkot on August 20 after he showed flu symptoms like fever, breathlessness and vomitting, died this morning, raising the virus toll in Gujarat to seven. With the two deaths, fatalities due to the disease have climbed to 71. This includes Karnataka with 12, Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh with three each, Delhi two and Kerala, Goa, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Haryana with one each. Meanwhile, schools and colleges in Pune reopened today after almost two weeks of closure effected by the authorities to prevent spread of the flu virus.

    As many as 13 people, including two children, tested positive for the virus in Delhi yesterday, taking the total number of flu cases in the national capital to 441. In all, over 100 people were afflicted with the disease across the country since yesterday, Union Health Ministry officials said.

    Girl child dies of swine flu in Pune

    Pune: A two-and-a-half-year old girl child has died of swine flu here taking the total number of fatalities due to the deadly virus in the city to 23, health officials said today.

    The child, suffering from a liver disorder was admitted to the Command hospital on August 21 after she tested positive for H1N1 virus. She succumbed to the deadly infection last night, they said.
    Earlier, two middle aged women died of the infection in different city hospitals where nine more patients of Swine flu were reported to be in critical condition and had been put on ventilator.

    Meanwhile, schools and colleges in Pune reopened today after almost two week long closure effected to prevent spread of swine flu virus.

      Indian Swine Flu Death Toll Hits 72

      With the death of a toddler and two middle-aged persons in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat respectively, the death toll of swine flu in India has reached 72.


      More than 100 more fresh cases of H1N1 infection have been reported from various states on Sunday, Union Health Ministry officials said in Delhi.

      The two-and-a-half-year-old girl, who had been suffering from a liver disorder, was admitted to the Command Hospital in Pune on August 21, after which she was tested positive for the virus, health officials added.

      She lost her battle against the lethal virus last night, they said. With the child's death, the toll in Pune has risen to 23 and in Maharashtra to 39.

      Sarojamma, a 50-year-old woman, who had been admitted to Thirumala Hospital in Bangalore on August 15 and given Tamiflu treatment, passed away on Sunday night. This has been confirmed by the hospital sources.

      Fifty-two-year-old Rajesh Udhad, who was admitted to Wockhardt Hospital in Rajkot on August 20 after he showed flu symptoms like fever, breathlessness and vomiting, succumbed early on Monday, raising the H1N1 death toll in Gujarat to 7.

      As of now, the death toll is 72 with Karnataka reporting 13, Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh with three each, Delhi two and Kerala, Goa, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Haryana one each.

        I think this person, brings the toll up to 72.

          And then there's this from the Times of India which includes several of the above fatalities, but puts the toll at 58? I have identified 66 counting the 48 yo who tested negative, but I came in late and had to backtrack and probably missed some.

          PUNE/AHMEDABAD: The onslaught of the H1N1 virus continued to exact a toll as four more people succumbed to the illness on Sunday: three in Pune and
          one in Ahmedabad ? pushing the countrywide toll to 58. The report of one death in Nagpur tested negative on Sunday, keeping the Maharashtra city free from a swine flu death until now.

          Three people, including a two-and-a-half-year-old girl, died in Pune taking the number of flu victims in the city to 23. While Kamal Balasaheb Wagle (42) died at Bharati hospital, the life of baby girl, Tai Arun Bagal, got snuffed out at the Command hospital. Both had tested positive for the H1N1 and died early Sunday morning. Details of the third Pune victim were being awaited at the time of going to the press.

          Vadodara reported the third casualty of the day when Hasmukh Hingoo (47) of Bharuch, became the sixth victim of H1N1 in Gujarat. He was hospitalised in Vadodara on August 20 after testing positive. Hingoo is second to die in Vadodara after Arya Burade (7). According to Pune-based assistant director of state health department N D Deshmukh, Kamal Balasaheb Wagle was admitted to the Bharati hospital on August 22 in a critical condition. "She had cough, fever and breathlessness," he said.

          Deshmukh said the toddler girl, who was referred to Command Hospital by a medical college on Saturday, was critical, suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome. Major General A C Anand, Commandant, Command Hospital, said, "After admission to our hospital, she started showing symptoms of respiratory infection. She succumbed to H1N1 on Sunday. The report confirming she was H1N1 positive came after her death."

          Vadodara's Hingoo was referred by a private hospital to SSGH with symptoms of pneumonia. He was admitted in a critical condition. However, his condition worsened and he died due to bilateral pneumonia, ARDS apart from H1N1.

              A two-and-a-half-year-old child, who was admitted to a hospital in Pune, the worst-hit by the virus, on August 21 after she tested positive, died last night, health officials said.

              With the infant's death, the toll mounted to 23 in Pune where educational institutions, malls and theatres, shut two weeks ago, reopened today.
