Pune saw two more H1N1 deaths on Wednesday, that of 55-year-old V W Avgade at KEM Hospital and 54-year-old Narendra Deshpande at Sahyadri-Munot Hospital. While Avgade died around 4 am, Deshpande breathed his last around 8 pm.

There was some initial confusion about the exact cause of death of Avgade. While District Collector Chandrakant Dalvi, at his daily briefing, said he was unaware of it being a H1N1 death as he had with him only reports received from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) till 8 am, the test report from NIV came around 9 am, stating that he was tested positive for the H1N1 virus.

KEM Hospital's medical director Dr VL Yemul, when contacted, also confirmed that the NIV report had stated that the patient was H1N1 positive. Avgade's medical history showed that he had taken Tamiflu tablets and was admitted to KEM Hospital on August 17. He was suffering from high fever and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), said Dr Rajesh Gadia, consulting physician.
