3 H1N1 deaths in India in past week: Govt.

Three people died of influenza A (H1N1) in India during the week ended November 7, a statement from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare said here today, quoting information received from the States.

With this, the toll in the country since the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the swine flu as a pandemic in mid-June last year has gone up to 2714.

The cumulative figure includes cases of deaths, which occurrred earlier but were reported belatedly to the Centre by the State Governments concerned, it said.

The WHO had, on August 10, declared an end to the pandemic but called for continued vigilance, pointing out that pandemics, like the viruses that cause them, are unpredictable.

All the three deaths last week occurred in Rajasthan. Besides, 30 fresh cases of the flu were reported from different states during the week, the statement added.

A total of 35 fatalities were added - 28 for Rajasthan of which only one was recorded by the state in the past week, and 7 from Maharashtra, all of which occurred prior to this past week. These two adjustments bring central figures in line with State figures.
