Flu reports are few and far between from India this year. If it ain't "swine flu" it doesn't make it into media reports and there are no published state or national surveillance figures. Media reported fatalities are listed below. Worth bearing in mind that a recent study estimated that, during the 2009-10 pandemic, confirmed fatalities in India represented only 2-3% of total H1N1 fatalities. Thus these confirmed H1N1 fatalities could represent between 310 and 450 actual H1N1 deaths, which in turn suggests tens, if not hundreds of thousands of H1N1 cases this year. The most recent GISRS surveillance data is not picking up any H1N1 activity - showing 1. that this surveillance is wholly inadequate and 2. that influenza B is more prevalent in India this year (at least wherever the samples were taken). So these H1N1 deaths are just a fraction of total influenza deaths, but it really is all we've got to give some sort of insight into how influenza is affecting one sixth of the world's population.
