Since last fortnight, many in the city have contracted viral fever, caused by the dry spell. Every day, around 30-40 patients are admitted to Navi Mumbai civic hospital with symptoms such as body ache, headache, cold, cough, fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or more and muscle pain. Dr Vishal Kini, of Care and Cure Hospital, Kharghar, said that he has been attending 15-20 such patients in his OPD every day.
He said that the main reason for the sudden spike in the number of cases is the fluctuation in the temperature. "Dry hot weather alternating with sudden showers makes the temperature drop down by at least 1-2 degrees and many people cannot withstand this change. Hence they get cold, cough and upper respiratory tract infections, which continue for around seven days."
