Two persons who tested positive for the Zika virus died over the past week, as the number of positive cases in Madhya Pradesh climbed to 84. State health department officials familiar with the matter, however, said on Saturday that the deaths were not because of the virus but other diseases.

Of the two deaths, the first was of a 21-year-old man on Tuesday night. The second was of a 19-year-old woman on Thursday, the officials said. But they refused to disclose where exactly the deaths had taken place to prevent the spread of panic.

Zika Virus: Patients increasing in the capital, not being diagnosed because examination kit is finished
Posted On: November 10, 2018 5:42 pmIn: Bhopal
Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal, As the number of suspected patients of Zika Virus increased, the examination kit is finished in AIIMS Bhopal. Due to the end of this kit, the investigation was not done for nearly three days. In such, the samples of 50 patients were gathered in AIIMS.

The samples were examined together on Wednesday after the arrival of the kit. Out of those, 40 patients have detected positive. However, the officers of the Health Department are not ready to say anything in this regard.

On Thursday, samples of more than a dozen patients from Bhopal were sent for examination, pregnant women samples are also included in that.

Separate survey of pregnant women will be done

Zika Virus is more prone to pregnant women. Being affected by the virus, the head of the baby in the womb becomes small and may cause other brain diseases also. For this reason pregnant women are being surveyed separately. So far about 100 pregnant women have been surveyed. Out of that only 2 are suffering from fever.

Madhya Pradesh records 127 cases of Zika but reports of fatalities false, says govt
            SAKSHI ARORA 17 November, 2018

The Zika infection cases in Madhya Pradesh come close on the heels of an outbreak in neighbouring Rajasthan.

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh has reported 127 Zika cases in the first 15 days of November, days after more than 100 cases were reportedly discovered and treated in neighbouring Rajasthan.

According to the Madhya Pradesh directorate of health services, the cases have been limited to six regions ? Vidisha (around 50 cases), Bhopal (around 40), Sehore (around 30), and two each in Hoshangabad, Raisen and Sagar. The patients belong to all age groups, and include pregnant women and children.

Transmitted by the aedes aegypti mosquito, the virus causes fever, conjunctivitis, skin rashes, and muscle and joint pain in patients. It isn?t fatal on its own, but has been identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a trigger for the Guillain-Barr? syndrome and microcephaly.

According to the WHO, the Guillain-Barr? syndrome is ?a rare condition in which a person?s immune system attacks his or her nerves?. It says severe cases are rare, but might result in paralysis or death.
            ...

Increasingly, the patients of Zicha grew four times faster than Rajasthan

Publish Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2018 10:49 AM (IST)

Bhopal, Navdunia Representative All major colonies of the city are in the grip of the Zika virus. The virus has reached in about 20 colonies. Therefore, it is becoming more difficult in prevention. This is the reason that the case of Zika Virus in MP increased fourfold faster than Rajasthan. In Rajasthan, 136 patients have been found in nearly two months. With 15 patients received in the state on Wednesday, 124 cases have come in 15 days. Bhopal has 43 patients in six days. There are now 48 patients in total.

There are some colony in Bhopal, where 4 to 6 patients have been found. These include Govindpura and Kolar. In these colonies there are patients of Zika in adjacent houses. If the work of destroying larvae and mosquito is done immediately with patients' immediate investigation then the infection does not increase. The survey was delayed because there were not enough teams for the larva survey. Teams are not able to complete the survey in three to four days. For instance, on November 9, a patient of Zicha was found, while the larva survey was not completed till November 12.

            Zeta's case found here

Four tamarinds, Govindpura, Sarvadharm Kolar, Avadhpuri, Ishwar Nagar, Naya Basera, Bhim Nagar, Shivaji Nagar, Shabri Nagar, Baba Nagar, Tulsi Nagar, Bagh Mugalia, Barkheda, Ashoka Garden, Arjun Nagar, Vikas Nagar, Damkheda, Banganga, Amrai .

            Rajasthan adopted this strategy

            - Initially the cases were found in Jaipur. After this, 250 teams were installed on the larva survey every day. There are 125 to 140 teams in Bhopal.

            - Samples of more than 500 pregnant women were taken. Only first-quarter pregnant women are being examined in MP.

            - What is the genes of Zika virus in Rajasthan, its Niv Pune was immediately investigated.

            - On receiving the larvae, a penalty of 500 to 1000 rupees was made. But there is no penalty in MP.

Only four rash victims in 48 patients

In Jika's Bhopal, only 48 patients had only four patients with symptoms of rash. The rest had a normal fever, but after the check they got infected.

            Symptoms of jika

Fever, rashes in the body, back pain in the eyes, pain in joints and muscles, red eyes

Such is the spread of Zika virus

Aedes infected with viruses, bites of mosquitoes, pregnant women to infants, sexual contact and infected blood.

            - No need to panic, send 14 samples for investigation

Dr. Ajay Baroniya, Joint Director of Health Department said that no death has been done from Jika till date. Do not need to be scared. He said that AIIMS has been sent to Bhopal for examination of 14 samples from Bhopal on Wednesday.

                Sharing outbreak data

Publishing epidemic data on open access platforms can help countries tackle outbreaks better
The recent Zika outbreaks in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are a reminder of how poor Indian authorities are at sharing health data. Neither Rajasthan, which saw 154 cases, nor M.P., which saw 127, published the day-wise numbers of confirmed infections. Meanwhile, even though the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has genetically sequenced Zika viruses from five patients in Rajasthan, it hasn?t published these sequences in any open access databases such as GenBank.

Both daily case counts and genetic sequences of the viruses circulating in India can be extremely useful to epidemiologists studying Zika. Daily case counts can show how quickly the virus is spreading. Genetic sequences can help us understand from where the virus came to India and for how long it had been circulating in Rajasthan and M.P. before it was detected. Using data from previous epidemics, scientists have been able to estimate the rate at which the Zika virus mutates. So, by comparing genome sequences from multiple patients, they can estimate when these viruses diverged from their most recent common ancestor, giving an idea of when the virus entered India. If this date is much earlier than the date of the first detected case (September in Rajasthan), that would mean a larger number of patients were infected, which in turn could help customise our outbreak response.

Over 280 cases of zika virus reported from three states: Union minister PTI | New Delhi December 12, 2018 17:03 IST

Over 280 cases of Zika virus infection, including two deaths, were reported from three states in India from September to November, Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Total 159 cases of the infection were reported from Jaipur in Rajasthan.

Madhya Pradesh witnessed 159 cases with Bhopal reporting 54, Vidisha 50, Hoshangabad 2, Sehore 21, Sagar 2 and Raisen 1.

One confirmed case of Zika virus was reported from Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

Zika virus has the potential to spread given the wide geographical distribution of the mosquito vector (aedes mosquito that also spreads dengue and chikungunya) in India, a lack of immunity among population in newly affected areas and the high volume of international travel, the minister said.

"Two laboratory confirmed Zika deaths reported from Madhya Pradesh. In both these cases, death was due to concurrent co-morbid conditions (due to septic shock with dengue encephalitis in one case and multi-organ failure due to septic shock in the other)," Patel said.

Alert - Level 2, Practice Enhanced Precautions

                    Key Points

                    • An outbreak of Zika has been reported in India.
                    • Zika is endemic (regularly found) in India. However, there is an unusual increase in the number of Zika cases in Rajasthan and surrounding states.
                    • Pregnant women should NOT travel to areas with risk of Zika.
                    What is the current situation?

An outbreak of Zika virus has been reported in India. Public health officials in India have reported an unusual increase in the number of confirmed Zika cases in Rajasthan and surrounding states. Zika continues to be a risk throughout India.
Many people infected with Zika virus only have mild symptoms or do not get sick. However, infection during pregnancy can cause severe birth defects. Because there is no vaccine or medicine for Zika, travelers should take steps to prevent getting Zika during travel. They should also take actions to prevent spreading it when they return home.
                    Zika Virus in Pregnancy

A pregnant woman can pass Zika virus to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. Zika can spread through mosquito bites and sex. CDC recommends special precautions for the following groups
                    • Women who are pregnant:
                      • You should not travel to areas with risk of Zika.
                      • If you have a partner who lives in or has traveled to India or any other area with risk of Zika, either use condoms or do not have sex for the rest of the pregnancy.
                    • Travelers who have a pregnant partner:
                      • Use condoms or do not have sex for the rest of the pregnancy.
                    • Travelers considering pregnancy:
                      • Before you or your partner travel, talk to your health care provider about your plans to become pregnant and the risk of Zika virus infection.
                      • Wait before trying to conceive.
                        • 3 months after you return (or from the start of symptoms) if you are a man or a couple traveling together
                        • 2 months after you return (or from the start of symptoms) if you are a woman and your male partner does not travel

What can travelers do to prevent Zika?

                    • Pregnant women should NOT travel to areas with risk of Zika. This is because Zika infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects.
                    • All travelers to areas with risk of Zika should (1) prevent mosquito bites and (2) use condoms or not have sex to protect against Zika during travel. They should continue to take these precautions after their trip to stop the spread of Zika to others back home. See below for more information.
                    Special Precautions for Specific Groups

CDC recommends special precautions for (1) pregnant women, (2) the partners of pregnant women, and (3) those considering pregnancy:
                    1. Pregnant women
                    • Pregnant women should NOT travel to areas with risk of Zika because Zika infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects.
                    • However, if you must travel:
                      • Talk to your doctor or other health care provider before you travel.
                      • Strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites during travel and for 3 weeks after your return.
                      • Strictly follow steps to prevent sexual transmission during your trip.
                      • See your doctor after your return, even if you do not have symptoms.
                      • Tell your doctor about possible Zika exposure at each prenatal care visit.
                    • If your partner travels:
                      • Use condoms every time you have sex ? or do not have sex ? for the rest of the pregnancy, even if your partner does not have symptoms or feel sick.
                    >> More Zika information for pregnant women
                    2. Travelers who have a pregnant partner
                    • Strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites during travel and for 3 weeks after your return.
                    • Use condoms every time you have sex, or do not have sex, for the rest of the pregnancy, even if you do not have symptoms or feel sick.

                    3. Travelers considering pregnancy
                    • Talk to your health care provider about your pregnancy plans and possible Zika risk before travel.
                    • Strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites during travel and for 3 weeks after your return.
                    • If you?re a couple traveling together or a man (traveling without your partner): Wait at least 3 months after you return (or from the start of symptoms, if you develop symptoms) before trying to conceive. During that time, use condoms or do not have sex, to prevent passing Zika to your partner.
                    • If you?re a woman (and your male partner does not travel): Wait at least 2 months after you return (or from the start of symptoms, if you develop symptoms) before trying to conceive. During that time, use condoms or do not have sex, to prevent passing Zika to your partner.
Men are advised to wait longer than women because Zika can stay in semen longer than in other body fluids and can be transmitted to partners during that time.
