    Mumbai: City records 32 fresh cases of measles, zero deaths

    Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded 32 fresh cases of measles with no new deaths, on Saturday.

    Looking at the increase in the cases of measles, the Maharashtra government has decided for extra doses. Children from 56 blocks in the state are going to get these doses.

    The BMC will administer special doses of the measles-rubella (MR) vaccine to 1,34,833 children in the age group of 9 months to 5 years to tackle the surge in cases...

      Maharashtra and its capital city Mumbai are reeling under an outbreak of Measles, with the caseload across the state reaching 717 and the death toll stands at 14 since the start of the year. In Mumbai alone, 303 cases have been reported so far and 10 deaths as of November 28.

      In comparison, Maharashtra recorded 1,337 confirmed cases in 2019, 2,150 in 2020, and 3,668 last year.

      Further, Kerala in southern India is also seeing an outbreak of the highly contagious disease, with 150 cases being reported in pockets of Malappuram, including Pookkottur and Kalpakanchery...

        A day before Gujarat votes in the first phase of assembly elections on December 1, the number of ‘clinically diagnosed’ Measles cases in Ahmedabad has crossed 1000.
        Experts worry that as winter intensifies so will the cases.
        The number of confirmed cases stands at 420 due to waiting for laboratory reports. However, experts said once an outbreak is identified and several cases confirmed, all children, who are clinically diagnosed with fever and severe rashes, are admitted and treated for Measles infection.
        In Ahmedabad, the outbreak has been confirmed in about 20 centres in three zones. The South Zone is the worst affected followed by the North and East zones...

            The two states, Maharashtra and Kerala have seen rise in measles cases. As per the health department's bulletin on 3 December, Maharashtra has so far recorded 807 measles cases and 18 deaths linked to the disease, most of them from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Earlier on November 28, a one-year-old girl died in Mumbai after contracting measles.

            On 30 November, Kerala's Malappuram reported 160 cases of measles reported in the district. The Indian Academy of Paediatricians stepped in and appealed for vaccination amid the reportedly alarming hike in the cases. Dr Jose Ouseph, State President of Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Kerala told ANI that so far there hasn't been any mortality due to measles in the district. Apart from these 2 states, increased numbers of measles cases have also been reported in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand.

            Earlier, the Central government had also deployed high-level teams to Ranchi (Jharkhand), Ahmedabad (Gujarat) and Malappuram (Kerala) to look into the surge in measles cases among children...

              Measles continues to spread in Mumbai as the city reported seven new cases of the infection in the last 24 hours. A four-year-old unimmunised girl from Kurla area in Mumbai died of suspected measles on Friday.

              The number of measles cases in the metropolis rose to 447, while the tally of suspected deaths increased to four, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said.

              The number of deaths where the cause has been confirmed as measles stood unchanged at eight, he added.

              "The 4-year-old child was admitted in hospital on December 6 and died on Friday morning. The cause of death was refractory metabolic acidosis with acute gastroenteritis with measles with bronchopneumonia in a case of severe acute malnutrition," the BMC's bulletin informed...

                The recent upsurge in measles cases in the country led to the death of 40 children, of which three were in Haryana and the highest, 13, in Maharashtra.

                Giving information on the sudden rise in measles cases in November and December this year, the government on Friday told Parliament that 10,416 measles cases and 40 deaths were seen between November 1 and December 12. The upsurge was witnessed in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala, Jharkhand and Maharashtra. Minister of State for Health Bharati Pawar said taking note of certain districts and cities witnessing the upsurge, the Centre deployed multi-disciplinary teams comprising of public health specialists, paediatricians and microbiologists to assess the situation and provide technical support to the states...

                  Even as Parliament was told that there have been 9 deaths due to measles in Gujarat, officials of the health department clarified that these deaths are all suspect and occured before the outbreak in October. Dr Nayan Jani, Additional Director of Family Welfare and State Immunization Officer, told Mirror, "We have not seen a single laboratory confirmed death due to Measles this year and there has not been a single death due to Measles during the outbreak since October."

                  Notably, all 33 districts and 8 municipal corporations in Gujarat have reported suspect cases ranging from more than 1,200 to as few as 8 patients. However, the 76 outbreak sites in healthcare centres are located in just 13 districts and 5 municipal corporations.

                  Most and least affected areas

                  The two areas with the highest number of cases are Ahmedabad city with 1,235 suspected and 457 confirmed cases, and Surat city with 436 suspected and 86 confirmed cases. The mostly tribal-dominated districts of Chhota Udepur, the Dangs, Narmada, Navsari and Tapi, all have a few suspect cases but no confirmed cases of Measles as yet.

                        Mumbai: A 3-year-old boy with breathing issues succumbed to measles at a BMC hospital on Tuesday (December 27), a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation report said. Since the surge in measles cases in October 2022, the city has seen sixteen deaths of which eight are suspected of measles. The child initially had a fever followed by rashes and was hospitalised three days later on December 26 for breathing difficulties. His condition deteriorated quickly and he died of septic shock, anaemia, and malnutrition. Mumbai's infection tally has reached here to 549, a civic official said.

                        According to the BMC, "Of the 2,60,739 children in the 9-month to 5-year age group in 78 health posts, 90,940 have been given additional doses of measles-rubella. Of the 5,293 children in the 6-month to 9-month age group in 21 health posts where the cases in the sub-9-month segment are more than 10 per cent of total lab-confirmed cases, 2,195 children have been given 'zero doses' of MR vaccine."

                        A BMC release said 24 children have been admitted and 20 were discharged during the day. Only 99 of the 337 hospital beds earmarked for measles treatment are currently occupied, it said...

                          Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 6 (IANS): Three unvaccinated children in a family have lost their lives to measles within a span of just three weeks in the Danigarhi village in Unnao.

                          Thirty-five more children in the same village have developed rashes and are suffering from fever.

                          Out of these, three have been hospitalised due to their serious condition.

                                Indore (Madhya Pradesh): There is no relief to the city from measles’ outbreak. Eleven new patients were identified on Thursday taking the tally of such cases to 31 in last two weeks.

                                Moreover, the patients were found in three new areas. As samples are still pending, officials are apprehensive of a few of them returning positive.

                                “As many as 11 new patients found positive are of between the age of nine months and 19 years. Out of these eleven patients, three are from Chandan Nagar, two each from Juna Risala and Madina Nagar, and one each from Bambai Bazaar, Janki Nagar, and Khajrana,” District Immunization Officer Dr Tarun Gupta said.

                                He said that most of these patients were recovering well and none of them was fully vaccinated.

                                The team of the health department has intensified the door-to-door survey in these areas and the vaccination drive...
