MUMBAI: Two teenagers from Dharavi and Kurla have succumbed to dengue and leptospirosis in the last 12 days of June, making them the first two victims of monsoon-related ailments this year.
The Kurla teen is suspected to have contracted leptospirosis while playing football in a muddy area.
A resident of Milan Nagar in Kurla, Bharat Kale (15) was admitted to the civic-run Sion Hospital on Sunday in a serious condition. Doctors confirmed that he had tested positive for leptospirosis, a disease that is spread by contact with water contaminated by animals infected with the bacteria leptospira. The boy succumbed to the infection within 24 hours of admission after having developed an acute lung injury and multi-organ dysfunction. His treatment history prior to admission at Sion is currently under investigation.

Doctors at Sion Hospital said that Dharavi boy Mohammed Rehan (13), who succumbed to suspected dengue on June 13, died within hours of coming to the hospital. He was brought here at 6.38am and he was declared died around 4.45pm. He was extremely critical and succumbed to dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) with encephalitis. DHF is a serious complication of the mosquito-borne disease associated with high mortality, said a doctor. Civic officials, though, have maintained that the number of positive cases are not alarming and deaths can be prevented if treatment is sought in time.
