SHAHJAHANPUR: Eight children below seven years have died of a "mysterious fever" in the past one week in Shahjahanpur district's Manorathpur Sehsowari village. The development has left health experts perplexed and a team of experts led by district immunization officer and district malaria officer arrived here on Wednesday to identify the cause of these deaths.

Officials said that the team found several suspected cases of diphtheria as children were suffering from fever, sore throat and tonsillitis. The team also collected throat samples of the infected kids and will send them to Lucknow for testing.
    ...
"This is a very serious issue and a team of doctors will monitor the village over the next few day days until the situation normalizes. We are suspecting diphtheria to be the reason behind these deaths. However, that can only be confirmed after the reports come from Lucknow," CNO RP Rawat said.
