Rise in fever deaths in city: Audit begins today
TNN | Updated: Jul 13, 2017, 12:01 AM IST
Thiruvananthapuram: The district health administration will initiate an audit on fever deaths being reported in the capital on Thursday.
The decision comes in the wake of reports from doctors that the unprecedented spurt in fever deaths might be reflective of improper analysis of data and lack of precise documentation of cases.

The doctors say that no proper measures have been taken to analyse and diagnose the pattern and symptoms of fever being reported in the state. As per the state-wise data from the health department, only 38% of death cases, which is 133 out of 350 death cases, were confirmed as dengue deaths. Almost 1,081 people have been affected with H1N1 and 71 death cases were reported and 2,000 people were affected with leptospirosis and 52 deaths were reported.
Meanwhile, 17,10,124 patients have been affected by normal fever so far and 52 deaths have been reported and doctors point out that the reports on growing incidence of fever deaths might be because of lack of proper analysis and documentation. "At present, there are no means of documenting the correct reason for death of a patient affected with normal fever. For many other diseases like West Nile fever and Mers-Cov, the symptoms are same as the symptoms of fever but no one is doing a study on the death cases," said a doctor from the Medical College.

Comment: The fatality numbers quoted are to July 11 and for Dengue and H1N1 include both confirmed and suspected deaths. Just what the heck is "normal fever"? - RoTwitter: @RonanKelly13
