Dengue stalks villages on the city?s edge
By Mohammed Yacoob | ENS - HAROHALLI (RAMANAGARAM) 28th July 2013 08:15 AM
People in Anedoddi locality of this village 46 km from Bangalore are living in constant fear. Dengue has claimed one life, 35 have tested positive and 122 others are being treated for suspected dengue. Even a slight increase in body temperature prompts the 350-odd residents of this locality to rush to a nearby hospital.

Former vice-president of Harohalli Gram Panchayat, Nanjaiah, said the number of people suffering from dengue is more than the official figures. ?A few days back, a girl named Sneha died at Vani Vilas Hospital and prior to that, another woman had died due to dengue. At least 64 cases have been reported,? he claimed. The health and family welfare department officials, however, said that cases of dengue can be confirmed only after conducting proper tests.

Official record of dengue cases false, claims NGO
          Mumbai Mirror | Jul 30, 2013, 01.18 AM IST

          Mumbai Mirror Bureau

Says BMC figures vastly low while Mumbai has seen a 600% rise in dengue cases in the last five years.

A white paper presented by an NGO has claimed a 600 per cent increase in dengue cases in Mumbai over the last five years. More worrying is the fact that the number of fatalities has also gone up drastically. These figures, incidentally, are way higher than those provided by BMC.

According to figures obtained through RTI by Praja Foundation, the city reported 4,867 dengue cases in 2012-13, as compared to 1,879 cases in 2011-12 and 1,404 cases in 2010-11. These startling figures, however, are vastly different from those provided by the BMC. While the civic body provides figures as per calendar year, their records state that 299 positive cases have been detected in this year so far. In 2012, 1,008 cases were reported and in 2011, merely 115 cases were reported.

Doctor crisis in dengue ward (Odisha)
Binita Jaiswal, TNN | Aug 2, 2013, 12.31 AM IST

CUTTACK: The dengue ward at SCB Medical College and Hospital remains chock-a-block with 20 to 25 new cases being reported every day. The deluge of patients has exposed the chinks in its armour. "Shortage of doctors is a major problem here. A handful of junior doctors can be seen running from one bed to other, attending to the patients. The senior doctors only come on routine visits," said RamakrushnaParija, attendant of a patient.

The dengue ward was opened on July 17 with just 30 beds and two doctors. Within a fortnight the inflow of patients increased manifold, forcing the hospital authorities to make space for 150 patients. But in the absence of beds, they can be seen lying on the floor. Currently, 115 dengue affected are undergoing treatment in the ward, which has only 45 beds.

Monsoons this year has ushered in a host of inevitable diseases, amongst which dengue fever, rat fever or leptospirosis, and stand out prominently. Alarming cases are being reported predominantly in southern and central parts of Kerala. Hospital records show a steep rise in the number of cases reported, with the death toll suspected to have crossed 100.
                        ...
?Mortality data is the fundamental requirement in any epidemiology studies. The IDSP reports show that there have been nearly 100 suspected dengue deaths this season. Dengue has been confirmed as the cause of death in only 13 cases, which alone will figure in the official stats. If not all, at least a few of these suspected deaths from both government and private hospitals should be taken up in every district for a detailed mortality analysis,? said a health official.

?After each epidemic, the department just moves on to other activities. There are no scientific reviews or assessment on how the epidemic was managed, whether all fever deaths were due to dengue. It is important to know what percentage of the population went into DHF or DSS because it helps us anticipate the severity of the epidemic in future,? a public health expert said.
