    Govt gets cracking on crow deaths
    TNN | Jan 29, 2012, 07.36AM IST

    KOLKATA: After ignoring the mysterious crow deaths in the city for nearly two months, the state government flew into action mode on Saturday and sent scientists to Rabindra Sarovar to gather carcasses and blood samples.

    TOI on Friday first reported on crows dropping dead all over the city....
    There has been an unknown fever in humans reported in Kolkata recently, too.

    The earlier report referred to above;

    What's ailing the crows? Birds drop dead, authorities don't care
    Subhro Niyogi & Prithvijit Mitra, TNN Jan 28, 2012, 06.17AM IST

    KOLKATA: Have you noticed a few crow carcasses in your locality of late? Probably you have, but not given it much thought. After all, it is just a crow. The fact is that these omnipresent birds have been dropping dead in large numbers all over the city since late October and early November. There is no estimate on the number of deaths, but it is large enough to have triggered a major scare had they been chickens or even pigeons.

    ...

    But scientists like Debjani Ghosh, who was with the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Sciences and Jagdish Bose National Science Talent Search, and activists like Ajanta Dey of non-government organization Nature Environment & Wildlife Society are beginning to worry about the sheer number of carcasses that they are encountering during morning walks. "There are days when I see at least four-five dead crows at the Subhas Sarovar. Come to think of it, I have never witnessed such a phenomenon in the past," says Ghosh.

    Dey first noticed the phenomenon around Elgin Road around late November.When more crows died, she asked the local garbage collector to report the number of carcasses daily. Between December 8 and 17, the KMC conservancy department staff reported 11 carcasses.

      Kolkata. Feb. 14:

      A visible rise in the number of crow deaths in many parts of the State, including Kolkata, for months and, near lack of communication from State administration about the reasons involved, has set the grapevine abuzz about a probable outbreak of another round of bird flu in West Bengal.

      Avian influenza or bird flu was last reported in Nadia district of West Bengal in September 2011. Outbreak of the disease was recently reported in the North Eastern States of Tripura and Meghalaya. In the Eastern region Odisha, reported outbreak in two districts and conducted second phase of culling operations in Mayurbhanj this month...

        "There seems to have been a crow epidemic in Eastern India. It had originated in the state of Jharkhand and it has since them seems to have spread to Kolkata. A crow usually falls down and stays on the ground for few hours before it dies. This is taken right after a crow fell down."
