A total of 4000 outpatients were treated for "Dengue" fever at the government medical hospital in Madurai on Saturday and it was spreading rapidly in the district due to factors like water contamination, uncleared garbage and open drains, officials said.

They said an increasing number of patients were reporting at the hospital each day. The recent death of a PG medical Student at the Hospital was also attributed to dengue fever.

The dean of the Government Rajaji Hospital Dr Shivakumar said the Hospital has adequate stocks of medicine to treat Dengue, Chikungunya, Malaria and viral fever and also enough testing equipment and kits for the patients.

Meanwhile, Corporation health officials have urged people to drink only boiled water and clear the garbage around their house, and use only corporation dustbins to drop the garbage.

They said hospital records showed that 30000 people had received treatment for "different types of fever, mainly chikungya and dengue since onset of the North East monsoon.
