RAMANATHAPURAM: At least 10 persons in Ramanathapuram were identified by a medical team as suffering from chikungunya on Sunday.

The sudden outbreak of the disease occurred at Therkkuvadi near Pamban and all the 10 persons had fever and swollen legs.

The medical team at the government hospital sent their blood samples to the zonal entomological centre at Virudhunagar and the tests proved positive.

Deputy Director for Health Uma Maheswari told The New Indian Express that unprotected water was the main reason for the sudden outbreak of chikungunya.

As water was supplied only once in 10 days to Therkkuvadi, the residents stored water for daily use. This led to mosquito breeding.

The deputy director also said that adequate treatment was being given to the patients.

Meanwhile, several cases of malaria have been reported from Karaiyur and other coastal belts.
