Bird flu enters Punjab for the first time
An alert has been sounded by the department in Rajpura and surveillance stepped up across the state. Culling was ordered and 33 ducks from the same reservoir were killed and buried on Wednesday.

In the first case of bird flu in Punjab, samples from two ducks found dead in an industrial unit’s reservoir at Rajpura in Patiala district last week have tested positive for H5N8 avian influenza (commonly known as bird flu). The samples were sent to National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal, which confirmed that the deaths were due to bird flu.

After the deaths were reported to the state’s animal husbandry department, it first sent the samples to the Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RDDL) in Jalandhar for testing. “The Jalandhar lab found something suspicious and it was sent for further testing to the national testing lab in Bhopal. The lab report has now confirmed that the ducks died because of bird flu virus,” said Dr Harjinderjit Singh Sandha, director of animal husbandry, Punjab. “It is for the first time the state has recorded bird flu deaths.”

Status of Avian Influenza H5N8 in Wild Migratory Birds and Poultry

The Secretary DADF, Shri Devendra Chaudhry has reviewed the overall situation of Avian Influenza H5N8 in the country. Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi have not reported any mortality of birds. On 27.10.2016, only one mortality in wild bird was reported from Sanjay Jheel, Shakti Sthal, New Delhi. The control and containment operation is over in Rajpura, Distt. Patiala, Punjab. Surveillance is being carried out.

2. The State Governments have been directed to be vigilant and ensure the surveillance for the disease and to take all bio security/ preventive measures

3. The State Government of Kerala has initiated control and containment operations from 26-10-2016 at epicenter village Ramankary and Thakazhy, District Alappuzha and culling process is in operation.

4. One Scientist from Southern Regional Disease Diagnosis Laboratory (SRDDL), Bangalore has been deputed to Kerala as a Central Observer to oversee and guide on the control and containment operations.

5. The situation is under control and there is no need to panic.

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government has issued a high alert about avian influenza (H5N8) after six ducks were found to be infected in a reservoir in Rajpura last week. As many as 33 other birds were culled in the area as a precaution. The deaths took place on the intervening night of October 22 and October 23. The cases were reported by locals to the district administration and samples were sent to stateowned Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RRDL) in Jalandhar and then to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.
