BHUBANESWAR: Mass culling of fowls at a state-owned poultry farm in Angul began on Tuesday following positive cases of bird flu confirmed by a Bhopal-based Central laboratory. As many as 224 chickens died on a single day on Thursday after which the samples were sent to Bhopal for test.
"All birds totalling around 1000, mostly indigenous chicken varieties in the farm, will be killed. Some chickens of different varieties were brought to the farm from Hyderabad a few weeks back after which many deaths occurred unusually. We are suspecting the virus was transmitted by those birds," said Fisheries and Animal Resources secretary, Bishnupada Sethi.

As the chickens continued to perish, the authorities sent the samples of suspected avian flu to National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, which confirmed the presence of an H5N1 virus on Monday.
