    Mass death of ducks at Purakkad in Alappuzha has triggered panic among farmers in the region.

    Joseph Cherian, a duck farmer, said he had lost 9,000 ducks (around 70 days old) in the past week due to a mysterious illness.

    Animal Husbandry Department officials said samples of dead birds had been sent to the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, for analysis. “The cause of the deaths is yet to be ascertained. We are awaiting the examination results, which is expected in the next 48 hours. All the dead ducks belonged to a single farmer. Other than the deaths at Purakkad, no such incidents have been reported from anywhere in the district,” said an official.

    The samples were sent to NIHSAD after tests conducted at the Avian Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Thiruvalla and the State Institute for Animal Diseases remained inconclusive...

      Delay in identifying the cause worries farmers

      More duck deaths have been reported from Kuttanad in Alappuzha creating a sense of apprehension among farmers in the region.

      According to Binnychan Xavier, a duck farmer at Attuvathala in Nedumudi, more than 3,000 of his ducks perished in the last six days.

      It is the second reporting of mass death of ducks from the region in recent weeks. Joseph Cherian, a duck farmer from Purakkad lost more than 10,000 ducks in less than two weeks. However, the numbers have not yet been confirmed by the Animal Husbandry Department (AHD)...

            In a major blow to duck farmers ahead of the festive season, authorities have confirmed the presence of a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in three panchayats of Kottayam district.

            District Collector P.K. Jayasree said the presence of H5N1 virus, a subtype of influenza A virus, was confirmed at Kattamada (wards 4, 5) in Vechoor panchayat, Vendakari Kizhakkechira in Kallara (ward 1), and the Kallungathara Ikkarasala paddy polders in Aymanam (ward 3) in tests conducted at the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases, Bhopal. An emergency meeting convened by the Collector on Tuesday decided to kick-start culling of all domestic birds in a km radius of the locations where the virus has been detected...

                    Bird flu in more places in Alappuzha

                    Bird flu outbreak has been confirmed in more places in Alappuzha. Officials of the Animal Husbandry Department said that more than 19,000 ducks within a one-km radius of the hotspots in Pallipad and Ambalappuzha North grama panchayats would be culled in the next two days.

                    The outbreak has so far been confirmed in seven grama panchayats in Alappuzha. Avian flu was first confirmed in ducks at Kunnumma South (ward 10) in Thakazhy grama panchayat on December 8. Later, it was reported from Nedumudi and Karuvatta on December 14, followed by cases in Purakkad and Cheruthana. Last week, more than 16,000 ducks within a one-km radius of a hotspot in Ambalappuzha North grama panchayat were culled...
