India: H5N8 Now Reported In Kerala State (Southern India)

    #11,845

India's H5N8 outbreak appears to be spreading quickly, with word today from the Times of India that the virus has now been detected more than 1300 miles south of the first outbreak in New Delhi, in the district of Alappuzha in Kerala State.
    Avian flu conformed in Alappuzha

ALAPPUZHA: Avian flu(H5 N8) has been confirmed in five places in ducks in Kuttanad by State Disease Investigation Laboratory(SDIL) at Bhopal and this H5N8 virus will not transmit to human beings, informed district collector Veena N Madhavan.
Speaking to newsmen after chairing a meeting of officials of animal husbandry department, revenue, police and local bodies here on Tuesday, Veena said there is no problem for eating the meat and eggs of healthy ducks. ``In 2014, November, it was H5 N1, which spread in Alappuzha and that virus was a threat to the human beings. However, this time, it is H5 N8 which was confirmed in five places- Thakazhi, Neelamperoor, Pandi, Ramankari, Kainadi- and it will not transmit to human beings,'' said the collector.
The district administration has set up 20 Rapid Response Teams (RRT) for monitoring and destroying the affected birds. Each RRT is consisting of two veterinary surgeons, two livestock inspectors, two labourers, two attenders ward member, two revenue officials and two police men. This RRT team will cull the bird flu affected ducks in an isolated places and this RRT team will complete their works within four days.

    (Continue. . . )
While Indian authorities are downplaying the threat from H5N8 - for bothhumans and poultry - the hard hit poultry industries of South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States would probably beg to differ.

Kerala is an important over-wintering spot for scores of avian species, which flock to the warm tropical wetlands of southern India each fall.
According to The Hindu 2011 reportMigratory birds arrive in Kerala, most of these birds hail from the . . . Eurasia region; Siberia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and other area north of the Himalayan regions. Some of the birds are also from the Himalayan region. . . . The migratory species arriving include godwits, terns, ospreys, golden plovers, pratincoles, several species of ducks and waders like sandpipers and plovers.
The rapid spread of H5N8 across the entire length of India is a worrisome sign, and more evidence that the H5N8 virus is able to hitchhike long distances via migratory birds.

Hit By Bird Flu, Duck Farmers In Kerala Worry About Their Livelihood

Kuttappan, a duck farmer who has lost hundreds of his ducks in the last few days due to bird flu.
ALAPPUZHA, KERALA: Ducks wading through fields of paddy are a common sight in Kerala's Alappuzha. But it's a tough time for many, like 50-year-old Kuttappan, a duck farmer who has lost hundreds of his ducks in the last few days due to bird flu.

Making things worse for Kuttappan, the local duck breeders are blaming him for bird flu because this year too, the farmer, like last year, raised the bird flu alarm by asking officials to test samples, which eventually confirmed the H5N8 strain of bird flu.

"Everyone calls me the bird flu man just because I was the first one to call authorities. It's not fair," says Kuttapan.

KOTTAYAM: With the Bhopal-based National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) now confirming the existence of bird flu among the ducks in Arppookkara, Kumarakom and Aymanam grama panchayats, District Collector C A Latha will on Monday chair an urgent meeting of the officials concerned to discuss the further course of action.

According to Animal Husbandry Department officials here, culling of the infected birds will start at the earliest in the wake of the NIHSAD findings. However, they sought to ally the public fears over the H5N8 virus that causes Avian flu, saying it could not be passed onto human beings.

?The H5N8 virus has been confirmed in the tests conducted at the high-security lab in Bhopal. However, it won?t be transmitted to human beings,? said Dr Hariharan, district Animal Husbandry Officer, adding, the culling of birds was likely to commence on Tuesday on the basis of the decisions taken at Monday?s meeting.

Meanwhile, more ducks succumbed to the deadly virus on Sunday, bringing the toll to 3,500 so far.

Kerala: Duck farmers want culling to end now

Each nursery breeds up to 20,000 ducklings every year during September?November. Ten hatcheries provide ducklings to the farmers at reasonable rates.

"I really don?t know what would be the fate of the business if the situation continues,? says K.O. Thomas, a nursery owner in Chennithala. The farmers' body wants the sector emboldened by organising all farmers with a proper registration. "Since the duck farming is a supplementary business, many out of the compensation list and many have given up job after the 2014 outbreak. Retaining this traditional business is important. There are some 650 registered large scale duck farmers in Kuttanad and surrounding areas, and the actual number could be over a thousand," said joint-secretary Bency Thomas.

Rapid Response Force teams cull 9,872 ducks

Teams of Rapid Response Force (RRF) set up jointly by the district administration, the Animal Husbandry Department and the Health Department culled 9872 infected ducks at various places in Kuttanad on Saturday. The culling will be continued. V Gopakumar, nodal officer, said the culling was carried out at various places. In Thakazhi Panchayath 817 ducks were culled while in Neelamperooor at least 3788 ducks were confined to flames. In Cheruthana 362 ducks were buried in a scientific way. Apart from this, as many as 5015 ducks which tested positive on Sunday in a one kilometre radius were culled.

The district administration combatting the bird flu outbreak it would continue the culling for another week.
