S Goa bans poultry from Karnataka

MARGAO: South Goa district collector Swapnil Naik issued a notification banning the import of all types of birds, including poultry fowls from Karnataka to avert the possibility of bird flu occurring in the state. There have been confirmed cases of bird flu in Karnataka's Bidar district.

Naik told TOI that the notification was issued on July 21 and once he received a review report, he will decide the future course of action.

Prices of poultry items in the state could rise in the next few days following the ban.

"After a laboratory in Pune confirmed the cases of bird flu in Karnataka's Bidar district, the report was sent to the Directorate of Animal Husbandry cautioning the Goa government from importing birds from that area. Presently, there has been no case reported of any bird flu transmission to humans, it is only the birds," said the district magistrate.
