BANGALORE: Even as city hospitals are flooded with cases of suspected dengue and chikungunya patients, the rat fever or leptospirosis is also being reported at Victoria Hospital. Nine patients with symptoms of rat fever came to Victoria Hospital. Of them, seven were admitted and given treatment.

Speaking to Express, Dr B G Tilak, medical superintendent of the Victoria Hospital said, ?All the patients admitted at the hospital have been discharged??.

However, BBMP denied of receiving any cases of rat fever. ?We have not received any patients with symptoms of rat fever in any of the areas which are under BBMP limits. People should not panic as it is not an epidemic??, said, L T Gayatri Devi, chief health officer of BBMP.

Leptospirosis symptoms can take average ten days to develop. Some of the common symptoms are as follows

    ● High fever

    ● Severe joint pain

    ● Headache

    ● Feeling cold

    ● Dry cough

    ● Muscle pain

    ● Nausea

    ONE MORE DENGUE DEATH

One more patient succumbed to dengue fever on Wednesday at the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital.

Valliamma (58), a resident of Koramangala was referred to the hospital on July 20, after undergoing treatment at a private hospital for four days. The hospital has so far received 48 confirmed dengue and 120 chikungunya cases this month.

Speaking to Express Dr Rajanna, resident medical officer, said, ?At the time of admission, the patient had high fever and she was confirmed for dengue." "Nearly 70 patients with viral fever visited Bowring Hospital. Out of them, 10 were confirmed to be suffering from chikungunya and six from dengue on July 21. We are regularly receiving significant number of viral fever cases from across the city," he added.

Similarly, other hospitals like Victoria Hospital and K C General Hospital in Malleswaram receive at least 40 to 50 outpatients with symptoms of dengue and chikungunya every day.

    Who all are at risk

Farmers, sewage workers and slaughter house workers could be at high risk of leptospirosis as it is caused by exposure to several types of the leptospira bacteria, which can be found in stagnant or fresh water that has been contaminated by animal urine.
