    Suspected cases of chikungunya

BANGALORE: Poorly maintained sewerage has yet again led to outbreak of chikungunya at Jai Bhuvaneshwarinagar near Yeshwanthpur, doctors suspect.

Around 1,000 are suffering from its symptoms in the area, claim the residents.

Septic tanks in the area have been overflowing for quite some time, leading to a mosquito menace, which might have caused chikungunya.

The first symptoms occurred two months ago when some residents complained of swelling and severe pain in the joints, and constant fever. Today almost all residents in the locality suffer from the ailment.

?Body weights of patients have come down drastically and they experience constant headaches and difficulty in walking. Most residents are daily wage labourers and continue to go to work,? says Louis, a resident.

The government hospital in the area has not been very effective, forcing residents to depend on private clinics.

?The government hospital does not have facilities or good medicines. Private hospitals charge around Rs 400 a visit,? says 50-year-old Seth.

The treatment has cost Seth and his family of 10, Rs 10,000 so far. As the disease would take another 5-6 months to be cured completely, treatment has to continue.

The mixing of sewage with water supply lines have been causing diseases like diarrhoea for quite some time now. Residents get water only from borewells, located very near to septic tanks. ?The tanker water from BWSSB comes only once in 10-15 days. If stored for more than three days, it gets contaminated too,? says Seth. Adjacent areas which get Cauvery water supply have also seen an outbreak of diseases, but on a smaller scale. BWSSB has been replacing sewerage lines over the last few days.

    Children are the worst-hit.

In the absence of effective intervention from anganwadis, there's no special attention given to them.

According to a survey by Rajeshwari, a member of NGO Sama Foundation, the condition of four children in is critical. ?In such situations, government should have taken action on a war footing. But there is no response,? says Nagasimha G Rao, Convener of the NGO Child Rights Trust (CRT).

    Chikungunya spread unabated

BANGALORE: While the BBMP claims the prevention and control of mosquitoes have been effectively implemented to keep the chikungunya outbreak in check, city hospitals have a different story to tell.

About 20 fresh suspected chikungunya cases were reported on Thursday in the DJ Halli maternity hospital. The Bowring hospital reported two cases from Tannery road and one from DJ halli, KC General hospital has received around four to five patients from surrounding areas.

Dr Shiv Prasad, physician at KC General hospital said, ?Every day we are receiving five to six cases from DJ Halli, KG Halli and surrounding areas.? Dr Sunitha, assistant surgeons at the DJ Halli maternity home, told Express that the inflow of patients with viral infection has increased from the last week. On an average, 100 suspected cases are being reported in the hospital every day. ?We have organised a patient screening camp in the hospital.

The blood reports have already been sent to National Institute of Virology.

The reports are expected within a week,? she added.

    DJ Halli blames BBMP

According to the residents of DJ Halli, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has not cleaned drains or sprayed mosquito repellents in their locality for almost a year. Open drains, stagnant water and garbage heaps are a common sight in the surroundings, even after suspected cases of chikungunya were reported from here.

They blamed the BBMP and feel that the unhygienic environment and poor sanitation is the main reason for chikungunya and related illnesses.

      2 May 2009, 2359 hrs IST, TNN

Bangalore : A total of 132 new cases of viral fever and 24 suspected cases of chikungunya were again reported from BBMP areas. A
majority were from D J Halli and surrounding areas.

"We held 18 chikungunya screening camps across the city. Twenty-four cases were reported from Bangalore East, 102 from West and 6 from South. All suspected viral fever and chikungunya cases have been treated," BBMP chief health officer L T Gayatri said.

After five samples from D J Halli were found negative by the National Institute of Virology on Saturday, 15 more blood samples of suspected cases of chikungunya have been sent for test.

Gayatri, however, confirmed two positive dengue cases. "There are sporadic cases of dengue, and two cases are from Lagere and Shivajinagar."

She declined to comment on two confirmed cases of chikungunya from Jayanagar 1st Block and Anjanapura Layout.

      Swine flu

Immigration authorities at Bangalore International Airport (BIA) will furnish details of international passengers who have travelled to Bangalore since April 20.

Transport minister R Ashok, who's also in charge of Bangalore City, said a 25-member team of doctors have been screening patients 24 hours.

"So far, 6,836 passengers have been screened and none tested positive for swine flu," he said.

As a precautionary measure, passengers who arrived between April 20 and 27 will be screened too.

The Centre has dispatched 10,000 Tamiflu tablets, 5,000 triple layer medical masks and 500 special masks for use by doctors.

The government has identified 10 hospitals and three private hospitals to treat suspected cases. They include St John's Hospital, Manipal Hospital and Columbia Asia Hospital.

      Doctors' strike

Although junior doctors have decided not to call off their strike, they agreed to depute six doctors at BIA to screen passengers.

"We don't want to cause inconvenience to people. So we'll send six doctors daily on a rotational basis to BIA," said Pushpalata, joint secretary of Junior Doctors' Association.

          Authorities clueless on death
          10 May 2009, 0010 hrs IST, TNN

Bangalore : The authorities are still clueless about the cause of death of Maruthi R, 36, from Jagjivan Ram Nagar. He is suspected to
have died of malaria on Friday.

BBMP health officer L T Gayathri said the death report from Victoria Hospital states tit could have been because of malaria meningitis, cerebral malaria or aspiration pneumonia. "The case was not fully diagnosed. He was admitted at Victoria on Friday and doctors just got an hour."

Medical superintendent of Victoria Hospital Dr B G Tilak said Maruthi was brought in a critical state from K C General Hospital around noon. He had neck rigidity, fever and meningitis. By the time doctors could investigate the case, he died. "We did not get much time to confirm cause of death," he said.

On Friday, residents of JJR Nagar and municipal workers took the body and staged a protest in front of the Corporation building. They claimed BBMP was not keeping the city clean. The area is in a bad state and drains are clogged, they said.

Ashok Salappa of Bangalore City Corporation Workers Federation said most residents of JJR Nagar are pourakarmikas and suffering from fever and other symptoms of malaria. "The corporation never conducts medical camps here. Though municipal workers clean the city, there is no one to look after them. The corporation should at least hold camps once a month,'' he said.

Gayathri said the city is not endemic to malaria. "BBMP has taken up intensive programmes and is conducting tests for all fever and suspected cases. Blood smears were taken from residents of DJ Halli and JJR Nagar. In total, 27 cases were screened on Friday and 56 on Saturday from JJR Nagar. At the hospital there, 26 patients were tested for malarial parasite and 30 more on the field. None tested positive," she said.

          Chikungunya and dengue update

Gayathri confirmed that no lab reports for chikungunya and dengue cases were received on Saturday. So far, there have been 15 positive cases of chikungunya and 6 of dengue in the city since January.

Chikungunya spreads in Yellapur taluk.. More District News
            S.O. News Service, Monday, 11 May 2009 - 14:40:48 IST

KARWAR: Chikungunya, the viral disease which struck Honnavar and Kumta taluks six months ago, is not yet in control. The disease has also surfaced in Yellapur taluk.

The disease is fast spreading in the villages. The villagers complain that neither the local health committees, nor the gram panchayats concerned have made any effort to control the mosquitoes, which are the carriers of the virus. Whenever the villagers make noise, the Health Department arranges fogging operations; otherwise no care is being taken by the department. The officials of the health department, however, insist that the villagers should keep their surroundings clean and avoid water logging near houses to control the mosquito breeding.

Interestingly the number of chikungunya affected people has gone up in the marriage season. Many of those, who attend any marriage ceremony in any of the disease-affect, carry the disease with them. The chikungunya affected people suffers continued joint pain even after the disease is cured. As such many villagers are worried that it would be difficult for them to carry out agricultural activities during monsoon.

2 more chikungunya cases in DJ Halli
              13 May 2009, 2354 hrs IST, TNN

BANGALORE: Two persons from DJ Halli with symptoms of chikungunya tested positive and are being treated at Bowring and Lady Curzon
              Hospital.

The hospital's Resident Medical Officer Dr Rajanna said five patients have been admitted for chikungunya and 28 for viral fever from DJ Halli, Shivajinagar and surrounding areas.

Over the past week, government hospitals have been getting an increasing number of persons with fever. From Shivajinagar, DJ Halli and JJ Nagar, chikungunya is now spreading to Bangalore South. Four positive cases were confirmed from Jayanagar.

According to BBMP chief health officer Dr L T Gayatri, viral fever cases are reducing at DJ Halli with 59 out-patients treated at BBMP maternity hospital and health care centres. Blood samples of seven suspected chikungunya cases were sent to the National Institute of Virology on Wednesday.

                More cases of chikungunya, dengue
                15 May 2009, 0033 hrs IST, TNN

BANGALORE: The city seems to be turning into a cesspool of epidemics. More and more confirmed cases of chikungunya and dengue are being reported
at government hospitals, despite BBMP officials claiming that vector-borne diseases are under control.

At Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, five patients have tested positive for chikungunya. They are from Shivajinagar, Tannery Road, Thimmaiah Road, D J Halli and Venkateshpuram. The hospital is getting 20-30 patients with suspected symptoms of the two diseases every day.

Resident medical officer Dr S Rajanna said around 40 blood samples have been sent for lab confirmation. The patients who have tested positive are recovering and out of danger.

Two patients who tested positive for chikungunya at K C General Hospital were discharged on Thursday. They were on fluids and given anti-inflammatory drugs. Three patients' blood samples have been sent for tests. There are many coming in with symptoms like fever, joint pain, body ache and fatigue. Most are from Nelamangala, Srirampura and Peenya. Jayanagar General Hospital reported two positive case of chikungunya last week.

"I have come across two positive dengue cases. The samples of all suspected patients are sent for lab confirmation," a doctor at KR Hospital said.

BBMP health officer L T Gayathri said three postive cases of chikungunya were reported from D J Halli, J J Nagar and Chamrajpet. "Doctors and nurses have been deputed for health camps in D J Halli and J J Nagar," she said, adding that the Palike has taken all preventive measures to contain vector-borne diseases.

                  Chikungunya on the rise
19 May 2009, 0433 hrs IST, Nirmala M Nagaraj, TNN

BANGALORE: Municipal bodies in denial and lack of hygiene have propelled Bangalore to the top of the chikungunya table in the
                  state.

Of the 216 blood samples of suspected chikungunya fever cases, 80 tested positive in the city, ranking close to Karwar with 60 positive cases, followed by Haveri (27) and Dharwad (26).

Considering the sample size and number of positive cases, state health officials are predicting an epidemic-scale rise in chikungunya cases in the city this year.

Till June last year, of the six suspected case two were positive ? one from Bangalore Urban and the rest from Bangalore Rural. Then, the Srirampura referral hospital was the first to receive chikungunya cases in the city. Initially there were sporadic cases but rapidly scaled up to epidemic level and along with allopathy doctors, ayurveda doctors from Dr Veerendra Hegde's Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital and homoeopathy specialists conducted a month-long camp in the city.

In 2008, 625 suspected chikungunya fever cases were reported and of the 98 blood samples tested 74 were confirmed positive.

Compared to last year, the disease has been reported early this year, with 80 confirmed case by mid-May and expected to worsen in the rainy season due to rain water stagnation and breeding mosquitoes.

In 26 BBMP areas, chikungunya positive cases have been reported and most affected are from K H Ranganath Colony in JJR Nagar, Jaibhuvaneshwary Nagar at Nandini Layout, Jumma Masjid Raod Opp. Textic Bank, DJ Halli, Kadugondanahalli, JCR Nagar at Yeshwantpur, TR Nagar, Guttepalya at Jayanagar 1st block and Tannery Road.

However, BBMP chief health officer, Dr L T Gayathri, says, "The number of chikungunya cases is coming down. On Monday, 14 mild fever cases have been treated and no fresh case of chikungunya reported in DJ Halli. In all other BBMP areas too, chikungunya cases have reduced."

Director, state health and family welfare department, Dr Usha Vasankar, said, "In the state, the highest incidents of chikungunya are reported from Bangalore with 80 positive cases." But the CHO, BBMP, says only 60 cases are confirmed in the state.

Early this year, state health officials issued a circular on implementing vector-borne disease prevention measures to all municipal and civic bodies in the state.

The department directed strict prevention of below-ground level pits for collection of water since they are the main cause of water contamination as well as mosquito breeding. But, no step has been taken in this direction and it's the main cause in DJ Halli and JJR Nagar where the disease is rapidly spreading.

                  Rise of chikungunya
                  * 2006 ? Of 1.25 million cases in the country, around 7,52,245 were from Karnataka; majority from coastal karnataka, Mysore, Belgaum and Kolar

                  * 2008 ? Of 46,510 suspected cases, around 2,957 blood samples were tested and 1,008 proved to be positive. Most were from coastal Karnataka, Mysore, Belgaum and Kolar. Dakshina Kannada district reported 39,042 suspected chikungunya cases

                  * 2009 ? Uttara Kannada, Dharwad and Bangalore district reported an alarming increase in cases

                  BLISSFUL BBMP
Why have chikungunya cases gone up in Bangalore? Pat comes BBMP's reply: The community is responsible for it!

BANGALORE: In ten days, 16 chikungunya positive cases and 200 suspected cases have been reported from Bowring and Lady Curzon
                    Hospital.

Though BBMP claims the number of chikungunya cases has declined, city government and private hospitals complain the cases have increased.

On Friday, two chikungunya cases were confirmed positive at the Bowring Hospital. Sporadic cases of dengue are also on the rise in the city.

Bangalore: Chikungunya Virus Hits 72 Taluks

                        Nagesh Prabhu/The Hindu

Bangalore, Jun 3: Chikungunya, the viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes, has spread to 72 taluks in the State causing concern among officials and doctors of the Health Department.

Over 4,190 suspected cases of chikungunya have been reported from 111 primary health centres of 72 taluks in 23 districts. Ninety-one cases of dengue have been reported from 18 districts of the State.

Suspected cases of chikungunya have been reported from all districts except Bidar, Raichur, Koppal, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi as on June 1.

The highest number of suspected cases of chikungunya is from Uttara Kananda district (969) followed by Haveri (710) and Bangalore city (308). The break-up for the other districts is: Bangalore Urban ? eight, Bangalore Rural ? 30, Ramanagaram ? 35, Kolar ? 129, Chickaballapur ? 207, Tumkur ? 135, Chitradurga ? 103, Davangere ? 15, Shimoga ? 293, Belgaum ? 265, Bijapur ? 237, Bagalkot ? two, Dharwad ? 158, Gadag ? 111, Gulbarga ? 73, Bellary ? 20, Mysore ? 161, Chamarajanagar ? 57, Mandya ? 78, Chikmagalur ? 62 and Kodagu ? 27. No case of death due to the disease had been reported so far, sources in the Department of Health and Family Welfare told The Hindu on Tuesday.

                        Blood samples

Scientists from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Field Station, Bangalore, have visited some of the affected areas and tested the blood samples of the victims. They collected samples of 1,189 people. As many as 449 cases tested positive in the State and 129 of them are in Bangalore city alone, officials said.

The officials have appealed to the public to use clean containers and drums for storing water and thus prevent the breeding of mosquitoes in the stored water.

In all districts, the department claimed to have taken steps to control it. Both indoor and outdoor fogging had been undertaken in 202 affected villages as part of preventive measures. Sources said irregular supply of drinking water in slums of Bangalore city and storage of water by residents in drums for weeks are major reasons for breeding of mosquitoes and spread of the disease.

                        Dengue

Ten cases of dengue have been reported from Bangalore city and the disease had claimed one life. As many as 24 cases of dengue had been reported from Haveri, 14 from Shimoga and nine cases from Uttara Kannada.

                        Malaria

The Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services on Monday issued a circular to all District Malaria Officers in the State to conduct indoor residual sprays for interrupting transmission of malaria.
The officers have been advised to prepare micro-level plan while prioritising the areas, sub-centres and villages at higher risk keeping in view the availability of insecticides and other resources needed for operational purposes.

Till now, no case of death had been reported, sources in the Department of Health and Family Welfare said.

Scientists from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Field Station, Bangalore, have visited some of the affected areas and studied the results of blood samples of the victims. As many as 449 cases tested positive in the State and 129 cases in Bangalore City alone, officials said.

There is no vaccine or treatment available for the viral infection and prevention is the best measure. The department officials have appealed to the public to use clean containers and drums for storing water and thus prevent the breeding of mosquitoes in the stored water.

Both indoor and outdoor fogging had been undertaken in 202 affected villages as part of preventive measures. Population residing in affected villages is 4,74,362, they said.

Sources said irregular supply of drinking water in slums of Bangalore city and storage of water by residents in drums for weeks are major reasons for breeding of mosquitoes and spread of the disease.

The person with chikungunya should stay indoors or under a mosquito net.

Karwar: District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Venkatesh told that as many as 1,810 suspected cases of Chikungunya and dengue fever were reported and treated in Uttara Kannada district this year, but he claimed that the diseases were under control now.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, he said that the blood samples of as many as 163 suspected cases were sent to Centenary Laboratory in Shimoga. Of them, 81 were tested positive for Chikungunya and 26 for dengue fever. He said that these diseases are wide spread in Sirsi, Haliyal and Mundgod taluks. Two children suffering from severe fever died at Sirsi. However, it could not be confirmed whether they died of dengue fever, since their blood samples were not tested, he said. ?In one case, after the death of the child, its mother and sister were admitted to Manipal Hospital with high fever. Their blood samples were tested positive for dengue. They have recovered now,? he said.

Dr Venkatesh said that usual antibiotic drugs for fever and pain were administered for treating Chikungunya and dengue patients. He explained that white and red cells count in the blood decrease from 2.5 million-4 million to one lakh in dengue affected persons. Therefore, all precautions should be taken to prevent further decrease of white and red cell count. Otherwise it army turn fatal, he added.

Venkatesh said that 30 health workers were sent to the disease affected areas of Sirsi to enhance awareness among people about Chikungunya and dengue. They are conducting door-to-door campaign, he added. The DHO claimed that fogging operation is being carried out extensively in the affected areas. ?However, only 15-20 per cent of mosquitoes die due to fogging should be prevented for this purpose. People should not store water for more than eight days to avoid the growth of larvae,? he suggested.
