Chickungunya Fear Grips Narmada District Of Gujarat

In a shocking development, the health authorities had detected nearly 150 cases of chickungunya in Narmada district of Gujarat.

The epicenter of this deadly disease is considered to be the Kothara village of Nandod taluka. A large number of people in the village are struggling from boils, intermittent fever and pain in the limbs.

Confirming the development, Pradeep Prajapati (Joint Director of Malaria programme in Gujarat) said: ?The chikungunya virus is endemic in the state and sporadic cases have been reported from some places.?

In a bid to control the spread of chikungunya, nearly sixteen medical teams, including doctors from municipality and the department of health and family welfare have been sent to the village.

These teams are performing exhaustive operations in the area to restrain the mosquito population.
As a preventative measure, the blood samples of five individuals for further tests have already been sent to the B J Medical College in Ahmedabad by the authorities. Apart from this, the district administration had also set up control rooms in some of the remote villages of this tribal district to supply instant medical help.

The first case of chickungunya was reported on March 6.
Speaking on this, Dr Appu Rao (Narmada Chief District Health Officer) said: ?The health officials first came to know about the case on March 6. Then the cases were taken to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Jesalpur.

There could be two reasons for the spread of the disease: one due to the extensive breeding of the Aedis Egypti mosquitoes in the utensils used to feed livestock. Secondly, the virus could have spread from the neighbouring villages.?
It can be recalled that chickungunya is an insect-borne virus, of the genus, Alphavirus, that is transmitted to humans by virus-carrying Aedes mosquitoes. It is marked by high fever, rashes and joint pains.

150 chikungunya cases detected in Narmada

BHARUCH: The deadly chikungunya has reared its head in Narmada district, with close to 150 cases being detected by health officials here. Most
cases have been reported from Kothara village of Nandod taluka, around 10 km from district headquarter Rajpipla.

Kothara has a population of 739 people and has 150 dwellings. Officials held a check-up camp after a complaint of fever accompanied by symptoms of chikungunya was reported. They have detected 150 cases till now.

Dr Appu Chitwadgi, chief district health officer of Narmada, said, "We have found mosquitoes in the village and this may be the reason behind spread of the disease. The symptoms of most patients are those of chikungunya."

Sixteen medical teams, including doctors from municipality and the department of health and family welfare in the village, have been formed to check the spread of chikungunya.

Health officials have treated a number of persons who complained of boils, intermittent fever and pain in the limbs.

Control rooms have also been started in remote villages of this tribal district to provide immediate medical help.

Over 25 chikungunya cases reported from Panchmahals district

Vadodara Over 25 chikungunya cases have been reported from Panchmahals district just a month after several such cases was reported from Narmada and Vadodara districts.

The district health officials on Tuesday confirmed 25 cases from villages in Kalol taluka.

The chikungunya cases have been reported from Nesda, Bakrol, Sansoli and Katol villages of the taluka. The district health officials have confirmed that no other cases have been the reported as yet from other areas.

?The first suspected case was reported a month ago and since then sporadic cases had eventually come up. The blood samples of all the suspected cases have been sent for further investigation,? said Dr B K Patel, epidemic medical officer, Panchmahals district.

Over eight suspected cases were admitted at the Community Health Centre (CHC) on Monday.

Patel said: ?We discharged six of the admitted patients on Tuesday afternoon. Only two of them have been kept under observation. All the suspected cases have been reported from the rural areas. None of the children are affected.?

Anti-larval steps have now been taken up in the affected villages as well as the neighbouring places. ?The situation is completely under control. Precautionary measures are being carried out,? said Panchmahals Chief District Health Officer Prakash Vaghela.

Medical teams rush to Simar as chikungunya, dengue cases surface

Junagadh After six confirm cases of mix-infection of chikungunya and dengue came to the fore, medical teams have been rushed to Simar village in Junagadh district and intensified drive to sanitise the village has been commenced.

According to the Health Department officials, more than 400 cases of fever have been treated till Thursday. No death has been reported so far.

Chief District Health Officer Dr Prashant Pandey said, ?Eight serum samples were collected from Simar, of which six were found positive.?

Pandey, however, ruled out that it was an epidemic outbreak, but maintained that an intensified drive was underway to sanitise the village.

?Nearly 40 medical officials (from Una and Keshod) have been pressed into service. Anti-larva drive and fogging is underway on a war footing,? he said, adding the serum samples have been sent to Pune for another clinical test. If second report also finds it a positive case, then the village will be considered as an affected area, he said.

The patients are being treated at the local Public Health Centre (PHC). According to officials, the village accommodates 712 houses with a population of 5,559 people.

?Preventive measures have been taken and the situation is under control,? said a health official, adding that the regional deputy director (health) from Bhavnagar is also in the village.

Apart from Simar, preventive steps have also been taken in nearby villages of Nawa Bander, Saiyed Rajpara and others.

Chikungunya cases registered from Navsari town, villages

NAVSARI: As many as 30 chikungunya cases have been reported from Navsari town and neighbouring villages of Ghelkhadi and Vijalpore in the past week, according to sources.

Ramnagar, Sanjiv Nagar and Gopal Nagar of Ghelkhadi, where immigrants from other states live, have maximum cases. "Private clinics are flooded with patients, who complain of itching, joint pain and body ache," said a private practitioner of Navsari.

Meanwhile, residents of Ghelkhadi have blamed the contaminated water supplied to them for the outbreak. "The condition of the pond, which caters to the area's water supply is pathetic and the quality of water is beyond purification," said a villager, not willing to disclose his name.

Suspected chikungunya cases reported from Dungripura Saturday , Jul 18, 2009 at 0031 hrs Vadodara:


At least eight suspected cases of chikungunya have surfaced at Dungripura village of Savli taluka in Vadodara district, where 30-odd suspected cases of the viral disease were reported two months ago.

After the detection of a suspected case on Wednesday, the District Health Department conducted a survey across the village. ?We came across over eight cases of severe fever and 20 cases of joint pain. However, none of the patients has the combination of joint pain and headache. We have sent blood samples of five patients for further test,? said Rahul Singh, Block Health Officer, Savli.

Chief District Health Officer Dr Bhagwat Itare said that though the medical reports will be available in the next two days, ?prima facie, we do not suspect any outbreak?.

According to officials, some of the fever cases were one week old. ?We have started giving them the required medical treatment, but none of them has been hospitalised yet,? Singh said, adding that fogging and other anti-larval activities are going on in the area.

Itare said that during inspection of the village, the team found villagers living in ?filthy and unhygienic? conditions. ?The households and neighbourhoods are very dirty with water-logging at various places, which might be the main cause of these fever cases. We have given a written notification to the sarpanch to take up cleaning of the village,? he added.

The village, located in the interior part of Savli taluka, has reported frequent outbreaks of chikungunya in the past also. It was only two months ago when five suspected cases were reported from the same village
