</TD></TR><TR><TD class=shownews_detail>More than one lakh poultry has been culled so far in Assam after bird flu began in the Kamrup district. The influenza virus has spread to Barepta and Nalbari districts in Assam, whereas according to the authorities, some unnatural poultry deaths were also reported in Palasbari district, Assam, Tripura and Mizoram.

C Sangnghina, director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department, said, "The Mizoram government has asked traders not to import poultry and poultry products from Assam and its officials to maintain a close vigil along the border."

The state government of Assam has ordered culling operations and officers began going from house to house urging villagers to hand over their poultry. "There are no official reports of avian flu attack in Mizoram but we cannot remain complacent. The Tripura government also issued a similar bird flu alert," Sangnghina added.

According to local villagers, the government is providing Rs 20 per bird compared to the market price of Rs 22 to Rs 25 per bird. SL Mewara, the state commissioner for veterinary and animal husbandry department, said, "Over 2 to 3 lakh poultry birds have been affected due to influenza. About 2 lakh more need to be culled."

Sisir Paul, deputy director of the animal resource department, said, "About 80 Rapid Response Teams (RRT) are ready to act in case of an outbreak of bird flu in Tripura."

GUWAHATI: Assam?s poultry sector is in trouble again following the outbreak of bird flu again this year.

The state health department has put all the districts on high alert after receiving confirmation of bird flu in Assam.

Hospitals in the state have been asked to keep tabs on influenza cases. The health department has also asked the district health officials to be prepared to deal with an emergency situation efficiently.

The H5N1 virus has hit Bangladesh too. Earlier this year, bird flu entered the state when cattle traders brought poultry to Birbhum from Bangladesh.

Animal resources development department has also decided to increase surveillance on poultry. This time stress has been laid on bordering districts so that no infected bird is brought into the state from Bangladesh.

Continuous attack by bird flu has hit India?s poultry sector for the past few years.

In fact, poultry from India was banned by other nations due to the spread of the virus. Now, again the Indian poultry sector will suffer another loss.

The outbreak of avian flu in Assam has prompted the state government to sound an alert in Calcutta and the rest of the state.

?A general alert has been issued about any unnatural symptoms or deaths of migratory birds or poultry,? health services director Sanchita Bakshi said on Tuesday.
The animal resources development department has asked the city zoo and forest department to keep vigil on migratory birds. ?We have asked the forest department to keep an eye on migratory birds that flock the zoo as well as lakes in and around the city,? said animal resources development minister Anisur Rehman.
Experts said migratory birds ? hundreds of them flock around the zoo and lakes in Santragachhi and other water bodies ? are the most common carriers of the avian flu virus.
During the last outbreak, thousands of poultry birds died in several districts of Bengal following an outbreak of bird flu. Rapid reaction teams were set up to cull birds in the affected districts in an attempt to stop the spread of the disease. But the flu came as close as Howrah, sparing the city by a whisker.
?Avian flu spreads very rapidly. Employees of the animal resources development department are being trained to tackle any outbreak on a war footing,? said Rehman. ?Special checkposts have been set up in the districts bordering Bangladesh and Assam.?
The minister, however, held out the assurance that the poultry market in the city had not been affected.
A joint panel of experts has been set up to suggest preventive measures and supervise their implementation. ?Experts are conducting epidemiological studies on the avian virus, its character and the way it mutates. This will help us understand better how avian flu can be prevented,? said an official.

The above comments describe an H5N1 alert issued by Calcutta and the rest of West Bengal due to the rapid spread of H5N1 in Assam (see updated map). Confirmed H5N1 or unnatural bird deaths have been reported in seven Assam districts (Kamrup rural, Kamrup metro, Barpeta, Nalbari, Baksa, Bongaigaon, and Chirang). Recent reports of deaths in Bongaigaon and Chirang point toward a wild bird source based on the vicinity to Manas Wildlife Sanctuary and large number of lakes and rivers in Assam.

Alerts have also been issued in Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura and at least one media report has described unnatural bird deaths in Mizoram and Tripura. In addition, Bangladesh has reported H5N1 (see satellite map).

Last season H5N1 was widespread in West Bengal and Bangladesh and was subsequently confirmed in Tripura. However, unnatural bird deaths or culling was extended to a large number of Indian districts adjacent to West Bengal and Bangladesh, including Assam (see map here here here).

However, this season the outbreaks have been reported earlier, and the spread in Assam has been dramatic.

                      Additional spread is expected..
