    Epidemiology Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection: unknown or inconclusive Epidemiological comments: epidemiological investigation is ongoing. Stamping out of all domestic poultry is being applied in an approximately 3-km [2-mi]-radius zone around the outbreak followed by compensation to the owners. An intensive surveillance campaign has been launched in a 10-km [6 mi]-radius zone including: - closure of poultry markets and prohibition on sale and transportation of poultry products in the infected zone; - disinfection of premises after culling and sealing of premises where appropriate. Restocking will be applied in accordance with a specified protocol.

    [India has reported, since its 1st outbreak in January 2006, a total of 86 H5N1 outbreaks in domestic poultry; the 1st 7 outbreaks, in 2006, were located in the midwestern state Maharashtra. All the other outbreaks since then were located in the far northeastern parts of India, peaking in 2008 (70 outbreaks). There were 5 outbreaks in 2010 and, so far, 3 in 2011.

      Dhubri, Sept. 10: Nearly 200 birds were culled in Agomoni, Pokalagi, Jhapsabari, Kherbari, Supaikuti and Bhamundanga under Golokganj police station of Dhubri district today.

      Alarm bells rang when one of 300 specimens of dead birds, sent to Bhopal for a test, confirmed two days back that they had bird flu.

      Immediately, the Dhubri district administration promulgated a ban on the sale of birds in the market and an awareness campaign was launched in the affected areas.

      An official source in Dhubri veterinary department said sale of birds was banned in the periphery of 3km area from the affected villages.

      When contacted, Dhubri deputy commissioner Sunil Dutta said culling of birds had been started in the affected villages and a total ban was imposed on the sale of birds in the area.

      Officials in the veterinary department said it sounded an alert and sent a collection of bird samples for examination to the Bhopal-based High Security Animal Disease Laboratory after bird flu spread in the Agomoni area in which nearly 300 birds died last week.         Officials of Dhubri district veterinary said that they had a target of culling 30,000 birds in 14 villages, which might increase given the tendency of spread of flu in the adjoining areas. ?We have fixed an initial culling target of 30,000 birds, but it may go up. We have readied 20 culling teams but deployed seven of them today. However, all the teams will be in action from tomorrow,? a senior veterinary officer said.

        In Assam, culling of birds in Avian flu affected Dhubri district has started on Saturday evening. The Deputy Commissioner of Dhubri, Sunil Dutta said that outbreak of bird flu was confirmed after blood samples and carcasses were sent for testing to laboratories. He said that so far culling of 30 thousand birds in 14 villages at Agomoni area bordering Bangladesh, has been ordered. It is likely to be completed within three days. Compensation to over three thousand families will be given in the first round of the culling. A high level veterinary team has already been reached in the district from Guwahati to monitor the situation.
        The district administration with the help of health department, has launched awareness drive in the district to prevent the spread of the disease. There are no reports yet of bird flu spreading to other districts of the state.

          Dispur, September 13: Bhamundanga Pt. ? I epicenter under Agomoni Block of Dhubri
          district has been affected by Avian Influenza in Assam. In this regard, the Department of
          Animal Husbandry and Veterinary has till September 11 culled 2142 birds through the
          deployment of 25 nos. of Rapid Response Team to the affected areas. An amount of Rs. 78,255
          has been paid as compensation to the farmers. There has been no fresh report of unusual death
          of chicken from any part of the state as on September 11, 2011.

            24000 birds culled near Dhubri to contain avian flu

            GUWAHATI: The culling of birds started by the department of animal husbandry and veterinary to tackle avian flu in the Agamoni area near Dhubri was completed successfully on Friday. The target was to cull about 24,000 birds.

            Partha Jyoti Gogoi, the regional director of the ministry of health services, said, "The process of culling started soon after the first cases were reported. We didn't want to take any chance." The Bhamundanga Point-I epicenter in Agomoni block of Dhubri district has been affected by avian influenza and about 25 rapid response teams were deployed there. Though the flu is yet to take a serious turn, officials claimed that all steps were taken to ensure that it doesn't spread.

            "Culling is the only way to prevent the virus from spreading. The target of culling 24,000 birds was covered successfully. As of now, no fresh case of unusual death of chicks has been reported," added Gogoi. He said there was nothing to panic as necessary steps have been taken. On Wednesday, the animal husbandry and veterinary department in Assam rdered culling of wild and domestic birds to stop the spread of avian flu in Dhubri district. Personnel from the rapid response team culled more than 4,000 birds at Bhamundanga, which is regarded as the epicentre of avian flu in Dhubri district.

              Guwahati, Sept 22 (PTI) Assam government has completed the culling of infected birds and mopping operation to control spread of avian influenza which broke out recently in Assam's Dhubri district.A total of 15,409 birds were culled and 149 eggs were destroyed till September 18 and a compensation of Rs 6,51,923 have been paid to the affected poultry farmers in the district, officials of Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary said here today.Clearing and disinfection work in 11 villages have also been completed.In this operation, eighteen Rapid Response Teams (RRT) were deployed. Bird flu broke out in Bhamundanga Pt-I Epicentre in Agomoni block of Dhubri district.The Bhopal-based Forensic laboratory had confirmed that the samples sent to it for testing was positive for bird flu virus. The state government had also directed the forest departments to take precautionary measures in areas where there is considerable avian population, sources said.
