DHARMAPURI: At least 210 people, including 18 children, have been affected by a mysterious fever during the past six days at Alangarai village near Dharmapuri. The patients also complained of pain in knee, ankles and wrists.

According to villagers, some of them reported fever on Tuesday. They also alleged that the affected persons were not given proper treatment from the Health Sub Centres (HSCs). Hence, they had to depend on some of the private hospitals in the area. People also complained about the absence of a doctor in the HSC.

Recently, village head A Ranganathan submitted a memorandum to the District Collector on the functioning of the HSC.

When contacted, Deputy Director Health Services Dr N Iyyanar told The New Indian Express that the outbreak of fever was not a serious one. Health department staff were attending the patients.

Iyyanar added that two teams of doctors have been deployed in the area for attending the cases. Blood tests to find out whether it was chikungunya or viral fever would be done soon.

He noted that all medicinal support were being provided to the victims and advised the villagers to drink only boiled water.
