    Fresh alert over bird flu

    New Delhi, April 11
    Health minister Anbumani Ramadoss said today India had stepped up surveillance activities and alerted border states to take precautionary measures in view of the incidents of bird flu outbreak in Myanmar, Bangladesh and Pakistan,
    He said once the bird flu outbreak in Myanmar and Thailand came to light, and after it was reported in Pakistan, border districts in northeast, Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan had been put on alert and the state governments concerned asked to take specific action.
    He told media persons here that ministries of environment, agriculture and health were working in tandem to check any outbreak of the infectious disease in the country. Surveillance had been strengthened and besides checking poultry for any infections, people admitted to hospitals with pneumonia were also being tested for bird flu. Dr Ramadoss said no any case of bird flu among humans had been reported from any neighbouring countries, adding that only advice regarding the import of birds had been issued.
